Guangdong Hizense Seaweed Biological Technology makes agar. It cultivates gracilaria seaweed and extracts agar powder of high gel strength under the Haizhen brand, and it also refines agarose for laboratory use.

The company began in 1986 as the Chenghai Agar Factory of Shantou City and manufactures on a 10,000 square metre site at Chenghai in Shantou, Guangdong. It holds ISO 22000 certification and sets internal specifications tighter than the Chinese national standard GB 1886.239-2016 for agar. It has worked with Shantou University, the Ocean University of China and the Shantou Fisheries Research Institute on deep refining, and exports most of its output to Japan, the United States, Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia.
