Jinan Hualu Food makes nut and seed pastes and smoke flavourings. The pastes cover peanut butter, sesame paste and walnut sauce, milled from roasted kernels, and the company also grinds multigrain powders. The rest of the business is smoke flavouring made from hawthorn stones, together with the smoking wood chips themselves and compounded flavours, seven product families in all.

The company works from Liubu, in the Licheng district in the hills south of Jinan, Shandong. Smoke flavourings of this kind come from pyrolysing wood or fruit stones and condensing the smoke into a liquid or powder, which lets a processor give sausage, ham or sauces a smoked character without running a smokehouse.
