Hangzhou Ju Tao Biological Technology makes food-grade sodium polyacrylate, the polymer used in noodles, surimi and other wheat and fish protein foods, where it binds water, raises elasticity and holds texture through freezing and thawing. The company sells the polymer with application work attached, which is most of what a single-product business does.

It descends from the Gualu fine chemical works at Xiaoshan, Hangzhou, set up in 1991 and among the first Chinese producers of the polymer. The company took part in drafting the national standard for food-grade sodium polyacrylate and holds the first production licence issued for it. It also holds an invention patent covering high and low molecular weight grades along with several utility models, and Hangzhou recognises it as a municipal high-tech enterprise.
