Qingdao Keyuan Marine Biochemistry ferments microbial oils. Its two products are DHA algal oil and arachidonic acid, both grown in fermenters from oil-accumulating micro-organisms rather than extracted from fish or seed. Infant formula is the main market, where the pair are added together to bring the fat profile closer to breast milk, and supplements take the rest.

The company is a joint venture between Qingdao Langyatai Group and the Chinese Academy of Sciences institute for bioenergy and bioprocess technology, which is also in Qingdao. That gives it a research base in fermentation rather than a licensed-in process, and it handles development, production and sales itself.
