Shandong Huachen Dechuang Chemical Technology makes maltol and ethyl maltol, the flavour enhancers used to round off aroma and lift perceived sweetness. It splits ethyl maltol into three types by aroma character, a caramel type, a plain aromatic type and an extra-mellow type, and also makes methyl maltol. Bakery, meat, soft drinks, juice, coffee and tea are the main food uses; the same molecules go into personal care, into pharmaceuticals as taste-masking agents, and into tobacco, feed, coatings and plastics.

The company works at the coal chemical industrial park in Dongguantun, Juye County, Heze, Shandong, where its first-phase site covers 109 mu, about seven hectares. It runs its own research centre and will match a customer's aroma specification. Domestic sales go through a mix of exclusive regional distributors, direct accounts and company sales offices covering all 34 provincial-level regions of China.
