Shanghai Dyestuffs Research Institute makes synthetic food colours and sells them under the Lion Head brand, pairing manufacture with research, analytical testing and trade in the same business. Tartrazine, the yellow azo colour used in soft drinks, confectionery, jellies and baked goods, is among the colourants it produces.

The company is one of China's designated food colour producers and runs its own laboratory for identity and purity testing of colour batches. Its Lion Head mark was recognised as a Shanghai Famous Trademark in 2004 and the colour range has been listed for several years among Shanghai Famous Brand products.
