Synaura Biotechnology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd.

Synaura Biotechnology (Shanghai), known in Chinese as Hongmo Biotechnology, was founded in February 2022 and is headquartered in Zhangjiang, Shanghai, with a contact address at 500 Furonghua Road in the Pudong New Area. It is a synthetic biology company whose main output is human milk oligosaccharides made by precision fermentation, with a pipeline that now covers more than 20 products across biopharmaceuticals, agriculture and health foods.

Its production base was the first in China to hold a food production licence for HMOs. Lines are in place or planned for 2'-FL, 3'-SL, LNnT, 6'-SL and 3-FL, and first-phase capacity is 500 tonnes a year. The company reports the first HMO purity certification at 99 percent, ISO 22000 certification for the plant and manufacture to BP pharmacopoeia standards.

Synaura was the first Chinese HMO producer approved by the National Health Commission, and the first to be approved for both 2'-FL and LNnT; it was also the first Chinese HMO supplier to obtain US FDA GRAS status and the first to enter the EU novel food process, with a self-affirmed GRAS for 3'-SL. Research is run from centres in Beijing and Shanghai, staffed by more than ten senior doctorate holders and around 40 researchers, covering gene engineering, precision fermentation, pilot-scale process work and analysis, with a library of more than 100,000 synthetic biology parts and over 50 patent applications filed. A pre-A round of close to RMB 100 million was led by CICC Capital with the Moutai fund, and Beihai Mengniu Venture, an early investor, added to its holding.
