Wuhan Hesheng Technology Co., Ltd. makes natural product molecules by microbial fermentation rather than extraction, using four proprietary high-efficiency microbial chassis together with a directed anabolism system and an automated high-throughput work platform. The approach is used both to screen for new molecules and to convert known ones at scale.

The output includes lycopene, beta carotene, astaxanthin, nootkatone, bisabolol and ergothioneine, sold into dietary supplements, flavours and fragrances, cosmetic actives, and feed and crop protection. The team has worked on natural product biomanufacturing for more than ten years, has filed 60 invention patents of which 25 are granted, and has run projects under the national 863 and 973 programmes and the national key research and development programme for synthetic biology. Its work was named one of the top ten scientific events in Hubei province in 2018 and took the first prize for scientific and technological progress in Hubei in 2019.
