Angel Yeast Co., Ltd.

Angel Yeast began in 1986 as the National Yeast Pilot Base project at Yichang, Hubei, and now runs one of the largest yeast and yeast extract businesses in the world. The first plant doubled its capacity to 4,000 tonnes in 1994, Hubei Angel Biotechnology Group was formed in 1997, and Angel Yeast Co., Ltd. listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange in 2000, setting up an export department in the same year.

The company is organised into nine business units. Yeast extract for savoury applications, the range relevant to food ingredient buyers, became a separate department in 2003 and is now made on nine yeast extract lines. The wider business covers baker's yeast and bread improvers, human nutrition, animal and plant nutrition, brewing and biofuels, enzymes, and bio-based materials such as PHA.

Angel operates 35 production bases and employs more than 13,000 people, with products sold in over 170 countries. Overseas manufacturing started with a yeast plant at Beni Suef in Egypt in 2012, followed by Dankov in Russia in 2017 and an Egyptian yeast extract line in 2019; subsidiaries in Algeria and Brazil followed in 2024. At home, operating revenue passed 10 billion yuan for the first time in 2021, the Angel Biotechnology Industrial Park and Angel Health Food Industrial Park were completed in 2022, and the Baiyang Biotechnology Park in the Yichang High-Tech Zone came into production in 2025. Research is supported by 14 applied science service centres and around 1,491 R&D staff.
