Gutian County Fengchi Biotechnology ferments monascus, the red yeast rice culture used both as a natural colour and as a brewing starter. It makes pigment-grade red yeast rice selected for low citrinin, monascus colours in red and yellow shades extracted from that rice, and finished health foods built on monascus, including a tartary buckwheat and red yeast tea.

The company runs its own production bases at Gutian in Ningde, Fujian, the county most closely associated with red yeast rice fermentation in China, and sells under three marks: Chengjiu for pigment-grade red yeast rice, Dingyuan for the brewing grades used in rice wine and vinegar, and Fengchi for extracted colours and the health food line.
