Yantai Hengyuan Bioengineering Co., Ltd. was founded in November 2003 at Yantai, Shandong province, with registered capital of RMB 60 million and a site of 140,000 square metres. Its main products are fumaric acid, L-aspartic acid and L-alanine, the last in both industrial and pharmaceutical and food grades. The company states that it has become the largest production base worldwide for fumaric acid, L-aspartic acid and enzymatically produced alanine.

Research infrastructure includes a postdoctoral research station, a joint biotechnology R&D centre with the China National Research Institute of Food and Fermentation Industries, a Shandong engineering technology research centre and a provincial engineering research centre for fumaric acid bioconversion, a Shandong enterprise technology centre and a provincial one-enterprise-one-technology R&D centre. The company holds 61 intellectual property rights including 21 invention patents, and has carried out projects under an NDRC resource conservation and environmental protection programme, a Shandong major special programme for independent innovation and a marine economy demonstration project.

Product quality is specified against FCC IV. Certification covers ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001 and ISO 22000, together with BRC, OU Kosher, Halal, FAMI-QS and FDA registration. L-aspartic acid and L-alanine are listed in the Shandong innovative industrial product catalogue. The company is a national manufacturing single champion demonstration enterprise, and exports to the United States, Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom, Germany and France.
