Yantai Zhouji Marine Biotechnology extracts alginates from brown seaweed. Its food range covers sodium alginate and propylene glycol alginate, used as thickeners and stabilisers, and it makes industrial sodium alginate and textile printing paste from the same raw material.

The company set up at Xingcun in Haiyang, under Yantai, in 2005, on a site of 50,000 square metres with total assets of 90 million yuan. Combined output runs at 3,000 tonnes a year. It sells across more than 30 Chinese provinces and regions and exports to over 20 countries, and keeps a municipal research centre together with a laboratory for printing and dyeing applications.
