Zhejiang Golden-Shell Pharmaceutical makes marine polysaccharides from crustacean shell. The range runs from high-purity chitin through chitosan, water-soluble chitosan and carboxymethyl chitosan to chitosan oligosaccharide, which the company makes by enzymatic hydrolysis using its own enzyme together with membrane separation. D-glucosamine salts, chondroitin sulphate sodium, collagen powders and finished capsules and tablets sit alongside them.

The company began in 1994 as Golden-Shell Biochemical and manufactures at Kanmen in Yuhuan, Zhejiang, on more than 20,000 square metres with around 300 staff. Its glucosamine, chitosan and chitin derivative workshops are built to GMP requirements. It holds NSF-GMP registration for US dietary ingredients, ISO 9001, ISO 22000, HACCP and halal certification and a Chinese drug manufacturing licence for excipients and active ingredients, has filed US FDA Drug Master Files for several products, and exports over 95 percent of output to more than 30 countries.
