Kunming Biogenic Co., Ltd.

Kunming Biogenic Co., Ltd., registered in Chinese as Kunming Baiou Microalgae Technology Co., Ltd., was incorporated on 13 July 2004 after the Japanese firm Biogenic signed an investment agreement with the Kunming Economic and Technological Development Zone the previous month. Total investment was recorded at USD 6.16 million, and the business remains wholly Japanese-owned.

The company cultivates Haematococcus pluvialis and processes it into natural astaxanthin. It began exporting Haematococcus algal powder in September 2005, and in 2008 built what it describes as China's first fully enclosed glass-tube photobioreactor for the alga, making it the first company in Yunnan to cultivate Haematococcus pluvialis. Its registered scope covers microalgae cultivation and processing research, plant extraction technology, and the import, export and wholesale of Haematococcus-based foods, cosmetics and health products.

Product formats listed with the food additives association include astaxanthin oil, cold water dispersible astaxanthin powder, an astaxanthin aqueous solution and a Haematococcus microcapsule powder, supplied into food, health supplement, skincare, pet, aquaculture and poultry markets. The company names Suntory and DHC among its customers. Its offices are at 16 Pufa Road in the Kunming area of the China (Yunnan) Pilot Free Trade Zone.
