Shanghai Essen Fiber Biotechnology Co., Ltd., registered in Chinese as Shanghai Tonghua Yishengxian Biotechnology Co., Ltd. (上海同化益生纤生物科技有限公司), was set up in September 2018 and is registered on Zhenggao Road in Yangpu District, Shanghai. It makes functional plant fibres.

Raw material is drawn from grain, fruit and vegetable, herbaceous and woody plant sources, which the company processes into cellulose, wheat fibre and oat fibre. Applications are in filter aids, functional and dietary fibre, and nutritional products for food manufacture, functional foods and medical nutrition. Reported cellulose capacity exceeds 4,000 tonnes a year. The company holds a Chinese food-grade plant cellulose production licence and has taken part in national standard revision work, and it holds several core patents of its own.

Alongside standard grades it takes custom development work for brand owners and institutional customers. It runs four cellulose application laboratories and set up a high-fibre food research platform with the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Shanghai Ocean University and the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology. Technical direction is led by Zhang Nan, a cellulose specialist. The company has exhibited at the spring Food Ingredients China trade fair.
