Shanxi Hengqiang Chemical Co., Ltd.

Shanxi Hengqiang Chemical was founded in 2005 and makes acids derived from maleic anhydride, principally DL-malic acid, fumaric acid and disodium malate, alongside refined crude benzene. The works cover 100,000 square metres and employ more than 140 people, including 12 senior technical staff. Installed lines are given as 150,000 tonnes a year of crude benzene refining, 20,000 tonnes a year of maleic anhydride, and a co-production unit making 6,000 tonnes of fumaric acid and 9,000 tonnes of DL-malic acid, which came fully on stream in June 2023. The company describes itself as one of the larger production bases for these products in Shanxi and northern China.

The plant sits just south of the coal chemical industrial park in the Xinjiang Economic and Technological Development Zone at Yuncheng, in southern Shanxi. Technical work is done with the Shanxi Institute of Coal Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Tianjin University and Taiyuan University of Technology, and the company maintains a research centre for thiophene-based pharmaceutical intermediates. It holds several granted national invention patents and states that it produces and exports directly rather than trading.
