Zhejiang Zhenyuan Biotech makes nutritional ingredients by fermentation. Amino acids are the core, L-histidine and its hydrochloride and L-theanine among them, with antioxidants, functional sugars and functional fatty acids alongside, sold into pharmaceuticals, food, health food and feed.

The plant is in the Hangzhou Bay Shangyu economic and technological development zone at Shaoxing, Zhejiang. The company builds its routes on synthetic biology, engineering production strains rather than extracting the compounds from plant material, and works with the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese universities on process research.
