Squalane
Squalane is a saturated branched hydrocarbon of formula C30H62, the fully hydrogenated form of the triterpene squalene. Removing the six double bonds of squalene converts a highly oxidation-prone oil into a chemically inert one, which is the whole basis of its use: squalane does not go rancid, does not develop odour on storage and does not discolour a formulation.
It is a clear, colourless, odourless and tasteless oily liquid, considerably lighter in feel than most vegetable oils, with low viscosity, a low surface tension and a refractive index close to that of skin lipids. It is miscible with hydrocarbons, esters and most cosmetic oils and is insoluble in water and in glycerol. It spreads quickly, leaves no tacky residue and barely evaporates, which is why it is used as the emollient base in products where a light dry finish is the objective.
Squalene occurs naturally in human sebum, where it accounts for a significant share of the surface lipid, and this compatibility with skin lipid is the usual reason for choosing it. Commercial squalane is now overwhelmingly plant or fermentation derived, sold as olive squalane, sugarcane squalane or rice bran squalane, with shark-liver material displaced on both supply and ethical grounds.

Common Markets Grades
Cosmetic grade at not less than 92 per cent purity is the volume article for olive-derived material, where the balance is other hydrogenated branched hydrocarbons carried through from the deodoriser distillate. Sugarcane squalane produced by fermentation reaches 98 to 99 per cent purity because the biosynthetic route delivers a single molecule, and this higher-purity grade is preferred where cold stability, colour and odour must be tightly controlled. Ultra-refined grades above 99.5 per cent are made for injectable and ophthalmic use and for vaccine adjuvant applications, tested against pharmacopoeial rather than cosmetic criteria.
The material is otherwise sold to a single specification and is not offered in particle size or physical form variants, since it is a low viscosity liquid. Differentiation in trade is therefore by feedstock and certification, covering olive against sugarcane against rice bran origin, organic and vegan certification, non-genetically-modified declarations for the fermentation route, and traceability documentation confirming that the material is not of shark origin.

Regulatory Status
Squalane is regulated as a cosmetic ingredient. In the European Union it falls under Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009, is not restricted or prohibited by the annexes to that regulation, and is labelled under the INCI name squalane, with the safety assessment held in the product information file. In the United States it is a cosmetic ingredient under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act as amended by the Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act, with facility registration and product listing obligations applying to the finished product. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review expert panel has assessed squalane and squalene and concluded they are safe in cosmetic use under the conditions described in its report.
Pharmaceutical use is covered by separate monographs. Squalane appears in pharmacopoeial texts as an excipient, and material intended for injectable emulsions is manufactured and tested to those standards rather than to a cosmetic specification. Where the ingredient is used in a food or supplement context, its status is determined by the applicable national food ingredient rules, and the shark-derived origin question is handled through species declarations and supply chain documentation rather than through a specific regulatory prohibition in most markets.
Manufacturing Process
The olive route starts from olive oil deodoriser distillate, a side stream of vegetable oil refining that concentrates the unsaponifiable fraction. The distillate is saponified or transesterified to remove glycerides and free fatty acids, and the unsaponifiable matter is separated. Squalene is then recovered by short-path or molecular distillation under high vacuum, which separates it from sterols and tocopherols on the basis of volatility at a temperature low enough to avoid degrading the polyunsaturated hydrocarbon.
The recovered squalene is hydrogenated over a supported nickel or palladium catalyst under hydrogen pressure, saturating all six double bonds to give squalane. The catalyst is filtered off, the product is bleached over adsorbent earth to remove colour compounds, and it is deodorised by steam stripping under vacuum before a final polish filtration. The sugarcane route replaces the first half of this sequence: an engineered yeast is fermented on sugarcane syrup and secretes farnesene, which is dimerised and then hydrogenated to squalane, giving a product of higher purity and a supply independent of the olive harvest.
