Manufacturing Process
Styrian oilseed pumpkin is cultivated principally in Austria (Styria), Slovenia, Hungary, Croatia, China, and a small but growing area in North America.
The defining feature of the Styrian variety is a recessive mutation that suppresses formation of the seed coat (testa) lignification, producing soft-shelled or hull-less seeds that can be processed without a separate dehulling step.
Pumpkins are harvested in autumn, the seeds extracted by mechanical washing and separation from the pulp, and the seeds dried to under 8 percent moisture for stable storage.
For premium oil, dried seeds are lightly roasted with added water and salt in batch roasters at controlled temperatures, a step that develops the characteristic dark colour and intense flavour through Maillard reactions and breaks the cell walls for efficient oil release.
The roasted seeds are then mechanically pressed in screw expellers, and the crude oil is filtered through plate-and-frame or polishing filters before nitrogen-flushed packing in light-protected containers.
