CABIO Biotech (Wuhan) Co., Ltd.

CABIO Biotech (Wuhan) was established in September 2004, but its work began in 1999 with its predecessor Alking Bioengineering, which developed a fermentation route to unsaturated fatty acids with the Chinese Academy of Sciences and became the first Chinese microbial oil refiner to launch arachidonic acid. Bringing ARA into infant formula in China followed from that.

In 2004 the company formed a joint venture, Cargill Alking, with Cargill of the United States, and built a factory at Jiangxia; a second plant at Gedian was completed in 2010. It took its present name in 2012 after a change in shareholding, became independent and achieved large-scale production of algal DHA. Natural beta-carotene followed in 2013 and sialic acid in 2017.

CABIO went public in 2019 as the first Hubei company and the first bionutrient company on the Shanghai Stock Exchange STAR Market, under stock code 688089. In 2021 it took majority ownership of CALID to build an animal nutrition platform and full ownership of CASOV for personal care. Human milk oligosaccharides under the NeoHMOs name were approved for use in China in 2024, and a national synthetic biology incubator was launched in 2025.

ARA and DHA products are recognised as FDA GRAS; ARA is certified as an EU novel food and DHA as USDA organic, both from November 2021. The site operates ISO 9001, FSSC 22000 and a business integrity management system. Business areas are human nutrition, with infant formula and food for special medical purposes at the centre, animal and pet nutrition, personal care and synthetic biology. The company is at 999 Gaoxin Avenue in the Wuhan East Lake High-tech Development Zone.
