ChangMao Biochemical Engineering was founded in 1992 and is headquartered in Changzhou, Jiangsu. It manufactures four-carbon organic acids and their salts as an integrated chain, which in practice means L-malic acid, DL-malic acid, fumaric acid, L-tartaric acid and DL-tartaric acid, together with aspartame. End markets are food, biomedicine, new materials and agriculture.

The company built its own upstream supply rather than buying it. It completed the first butane to maleic anhydride line in Jiangsu province, then added a second 10,000-tonne maleic anhydride line to feed its own acid production. A Jiangsu biochemical chirotechnology research centre was recognised as a post-doctoral research workstation, and the company also holds a certified national doctoral research workstation.

ChangMao listed on the Hong Kong Growth Enterprise Market in 2002 under code 8208 and transferred to the Hong Kong main board in 2013, where it trades as 00954. It used that financing to expand into a group structure, setting up the wholly owned subsidiaries Shanghai ChangMao Biochemical Engineering, ChangMao Biochemical Lianyungang and ChangMao (Dalian) New Materials, and jointly acquiring Shanghai Medical Life Science Research Center.

Certification covers ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISO 50001 and FSSC 22000, along with a Halal assurance system and FAMI-QS for feed. Sales are handled directly with end users as well as through distributors, and the company keeps staff able to work in Japanese, Russian and Spanish as well as English. Headquarters are on the 28th floor of Hi-tech Plaza at 518 Liaohe Road, with the factory at No. 1228 North Changjiang Road in Changzhou.
