Benzyl Cinnamate

Benzyl Cinnamate is a sweet, balsamic, floral ester that crystallises into colourless to pale-yellow flakes with a soft warm aroma reminiscent of Peru balsam.

The molecule has the formula C₁₆H₁₄O₂ and occurs naturally in Peru balsam, tolu balsam, copaiba oleoresin, and storax, where it acts as one of the principal balsamic odorants.

We source bulk Benzyl Cinnamate from top China manufacturers for our partners. The manufacturer is in Hubei. A smaller requirement can ship in a combined container with other ingredients.

Please send the grade you need, the volume and your destination port, and we will come back with a solution and a price.

Common Markets Grades

Benzyl Cinnamate ships as flakes, prills, or warmed liquid.

The standard fragrance and flavour grade is 98 to 99 percent assay (FEMA 2142) with low residual benzyl alcohol and cinnamic acid disclosed on the certificate of analysis.

A high-purity grade at 99.5 percent or higher is produced for fine fragrance and oral-care work where any free acid would shift the balsamic character.

A natural grade isolated from Peru balsam by fractional crystallisation is produced separately for natural-perfumery and clean-label flavour work.

Technical-grade material at 95 percent is sold as a cost-efficient fixative for soap, candle, and household-fragrance work.

Applications

  • Fixative in fine fragrance for oriental, ambery, balsamic-floral, and tobacco accords
  • Reconstruction of Peru balsam, tolu, benzoin, and storax notes in natural perfumery
  • Functional perfumery for soaps, shampoos, detergents, and household-fragrance bases
  • Candle and reed-diffuser compositions where heat stability and tenacity are required
  • Skin-scent and body-care products for soft, powdery, balsamic facets
  • Sweet honey, plum, and cherry flavour profiles at very low dosage
  • Anchoring component in vanilla, tonka, and gourmand accords
  • Hair-care fragrances for warm and long-wearing trails
  • Component of leather and amber accords in masculine compositions
  • Co-solvent and odour carrier for fragrance compounding work

How We Help Source Benzyl Cinnamate

  • Direct Factory Sourcing

We run the whole process: selecting the manufacturer from the top Chinese food ingredient producers, negotiating the price, verifying quality, and coordinating the logistics. You deal with us instead of with several factories at once.

  • Original Packaging and Documents from the Manufacturer

The manufacturer sends your Benzyl Cinnamate out of its own factory in the original packing, through to your destination port. The COA, COO, MSDS, TDS and any certifications reach you from the manufacturer as well.

  • Free Samples and Lead Time

We send 100 to 500 g free for your own laboratory to test and you cover only the courier, usually within 2 to 3 working days. ETD is usually within 7 to 15 days once the order is confirmed, and we check that date against the factory's own manufacturing schedule before we give it to you.

  • Combined Shipment

We can load Benzyl Cinnamate together with other ingredients such as Capsicum Oleoresin, Ethyl Maltol and White Pepper into one 20' FCL. If your quantity is small, we can also ship LCL.

Regulatory Status

Benzyl Cinnamate is approved as a flavouring substance and fragrance ingredient in the major regulated markets.

In the United States it is FEMA 2142 and GRAS by FEMA. The FDA permits it under 21 CFR 172.515 for direct addition to food as a synthetic flavouring substance.

In the European Union it carries FL number 09.036 on the Union list of flavouring substances. JECFA has evaluated it as part of the cinnamic acid esters group and cleared it for flavour use.

The compound is subject to IFRA usage standards as a member of the cinnamic ester family and is treated as a fragrance allergen under the EU Cosmetics Regulation labelling rules.

It is registered under REACH, listed on TSCA, and comes with Halal and Kosher certificates from most producers.

Manufacturing Process

The main industrial route is the acid-catalysed esterification of cinnamic acid with benzyl alcohol. The reaction runs with sulphuric acid, toluene-sulphonic acid, or a heterogeneous solid acid, with water removed by azeotropic distillation in toluene or cyclohexane.

After neutralisation and washing the crude ester is vacuum distilled and then crystallised from methanol or ethanol to remove residual cinnamic acid and benzyl alcohol.

A transesterification route from methyl cinnamate and benzyl alcohol with a tin, zinc, or titanium catalyst is sometimes preferred in plants that already process methyl cinnamate.

Natural-source material is recovered from Peru balsam (Myroxylon balsamum var. pereirae) and tolu balsam, where benzyl cinnamate makes up a significant fraction of the resin alongside benzyl benzoate and cinnamic acid.
