Potassium Diformate

Potassium Diformate is the equimolar hydrogen-bonded complex of potassium formate and formic acid, with empirical formula KH(COOH)₂ and CAS number 20642-05-1.

The compound is used as a feed-grade antimicrobial and acidifier in pig and poultry diets, where it is registered as a zootechnical performance enhancer and as a substitute for in-feed antibiotic growth promoters. The salt-acid complex stores and dispenses the antimicrobial activity of formic acid in a free-flowing solid form that is easier and safer to handle than the neat acid.

Potassium Diformate is a free-flowing white to off-white crystalline granulate.

The standard piglet grade has a calibrated particle size in the 0.5 to 2 mm range to allow uniform incorporation into compound feed without segregation during pneumatic transfer or pelleting.

A finer powder grade is produced for liquid-feed dispensing systems and for milk-replacer formulations used in early-weaning programs.

A coated grade with a fat or wax overlayer is produced for applications where downstream protection from moisture or premature dissolution is required. Material ships in 25 kg lined polyethylene bags and in 500 to 1000 kg bulk bags.

Regulatory Status

In the European Union, Regulation (EC) No 1831/2003 on additives for use in animal nutrition authorises Potassium Diformate as a feed additive.

It was the first non-antibiotic feed additive in the European Union to receive zootechnical-performance-enhancer status, a category previously occupied exclusively by antibiotic growth promoters.

The substance is not authorised for direct addition to human food and is not classified as a food additive. Use is limited to animal-nutrition applications under the conditions set by the marketing authorisation.

Outside the European Union, the additive is registered for feed use in numerous markets including Norway, Switzerland, Turkey, several Latin American countries, and parts of Southeast Asia. Each authorisation carries category-specific maximum-use levels and target-species restrictions.

Kosher and Halal certifications are routinely available, and the manufacturing route uses no animal-derived inputs.

Manufacturing Process

Potassium Diformate is produced by reacting potassium formate with formic acid in a controlled equimolar ratio.

The potassium formate feedstock is itself made by neutralising formic acid with potassium hydroxide or potassium carbonate, or as a co-product of pentaerythritol manufacture. The neutralisation is run in aqueous solution and the formate concentration is verified before the next step.

The formate solution is then combined with the calculated volume of formic acid to give the 1:1 molar adduct. The mixture is concentrated under vacuum and crystallised in a cooled crystalliser to recover the diformate solid.

The crystals are centrifuged, washed lightly with cold solution to remove free formic acid from the surface, and dried in a fluid-bed dryer. The dried product is sized to the target granulometry by screening and milling.

The original commercial development and the dominant production capacity were established by BASF in Norway in the late 1990s under the trade name Formi, which remains a reference point in the feed industry.
