Standard strengths run 200,000 IU per gram for direct top-dressing, 500,000 IU per gram for premix injection, and 1,000,000 IU per gram for concentrated dosing.
Carrier oils are usually crude or once-refined soybean or rapeseed, chosen for cost and cold-flow rather than for flavour neutrality. Acid value and peroxide value specs are set to feed-industry tolerance, not food-grade tolerance.
Antioxidant systems are the standard ones: BHT, BHA, ethoxyquin (where still permitted), or propyl gallate. The dosage is set higher than in human-grade oil to compensate for the lower-purity carrier.

Regulatory Status
Cholecalciferol is an authorised feed additive in the EU under Regulation 2017/1492 (functional group 3a, vitamins) for all animal species. The U.S. covers it under 21 CFR 573.780.
Maximum supplementation rates are set per target species. Ethoxyquin and certain phenolic antioxidants face tightening restrictions in the European Union, the United Kingdom, and several Asian markets.
FAMI-QS or GMP+ FSA certification is the baseline expectation for European feed supply chains. Documentation typically covers HPLC potency, peroxide value, acid value, residual solvent, mycotoxins (carrier-driven), and heavy metals.
Manufacturing Process
Crude D3 resin is diluted into a feed-grade carrier oil under nitrogen atmosphere with a heavy antioxidant load. The blend is held at moderate temperature until homogeneous and standardised to label IU by HPLC.
Feed-grade production lines are often run on equipment shared with other oil-soluble feed vitamins (A, E, K), with cleanout regimes that prevent carryover above declared limits but do not target the trace-impurity profile of a pharmaceutical line.
Packaging is heavy-duty lined steel drums or food-contact IBCs with nitrogen blanket. Cold-chain handling is recommended but not always practical at the destination feed mill, so the antioxidant load and quick stock turnover do most of the work in keeping the product stable.
