Futaste Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. was founded in 1991 and built its business on corncob as a raw material. It operates at No. 666 South Ring Road in the National High-tech Industrial Development Zone at Yucheng, Dezhou, Shandong province, and is described as a national bio-manufacturing industry base and a pillar enterprise of what the local authorities call China's functional sugar city.

The product range runs from xylose through xylitol, L-arabinose, maltitol and maltitol syrup to high maltose syrup, crystalline fructose and erythritol, sold under the Futian brand. Four of its products have been designated national key new products: FCC E967 xylitol, eutectic xylitol, high-purity crystalline fructose and high-purity crystalline L-arabinose. The company has taken part in drafting four national and industry standards covering xylose, xylitol, maltitol and maltitol liquid, and L-arabinose.

Research is carried out with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, Jiangnan University, Tianjin University, East China University of Science and Technology and Tianjin University of Science and Technology. The technology centre employs 152 technicians, among them 2 experts receiving State Council special allowances, 4 provincial experts with outstanding contributions, 2 doctorates and 36 postgraduates. Futaste has been ranked among the top 100 enterprises in China's food additives and ingredients industry and the top 20 in the national starch sugar industry.
