D-Xylose

D-Xylose is a five-carbon aldopentose sugar widely known as wood sugar.

The molecular formula is C₅H₁₀O₅ with molar mass 150.13 g/mol. The crystalline powder is white, freely water-soluble, and around 40 percent as sweet as sucrose.

D-Xylose is the dominant sugar of plant hemicellulose xylan and the immediate precursor for industrial production of the polyol sweetener xylitol. It also serves as the standard substrate for the D-xylose absorption test used in clinical assessment of small-intestine function.

We source bulk D-Xylose from top China manufacturers for our partners, working with several of them. The manufacturers are in Shandong and Henan. A smaller requirement can ship in a combined container with other ingredients.

Please send the grade you need, the volume and your destination port, and we will come back with a solution and a price.

Common Markets Grades

Three grades of D-Xylose reach the market: food, pharmaceutical, and fermentation.

Food grade declares 98 to 99 percent purity and is a white crystalline powder used as a sweetener, Maillard-browning reactant, and xylitol production feedstock.

Pharmaceutical grade meets the USP and Ph. Eur. monographs for D-xylose and is used in the clinical absorption test and as a building block in nucleoside chemistry.

Fermentation grade ships in bulk for use as a substrate in microbial production of xylitol, ethanol, and other bioproducts.

Refined high-purity grade above 99.5 percent is produced for chiral synthesis and biochemistry research.

Applications

  • Substrate for industrial xylitol production by hydrogenation
  • Diagnostic substrate in the D-xylose absorption test for small-intestine function
  • Maillard-browning sugar in seasonings, sauces, and savory flavours
  • Sweetener and reactant in confectionery and bakery
  • Carbohydrate source in microbial fermentation of ethanol and organic acids
  • Substrate in xylose-utilising yeast fermentation research
  • Building block in nucleoside and oligonucleotide synthesis
  • Carbon source in cell culture and microbial media
  • Reference compound in carbohydrate chemistry
  • Component of low-glycemic and diabetic sweetener blends
  • Substrate for xylose isomerase enzymology research

Brands Using D-Xylose

Widely-distributed consumer products that list D-Xylose on the ingredient label.

Brand names, product names and logos are the property of their owners. They appear here as published evidence that the ingredient is used, taken from the brand's own label or website. Their appearance is not an endorsement, and it does not mean the brand buys from us or from any manufacturer listed on this site.

China Manufacturers of D-Xylose

Top D-Xylose manufacturers in China.

Company names and logos are the property of the manufacturers themselves. They are listed here because our own directory records them as producing this ingredient. A listing is not an endorsement by them, and we do not represent them or speak on their behalf.

How We Help Source D-Xylose

  • Direct Factory Sourcing

We run the whole process: selecting the manufacturer from the top Chinese food ingredient producers, negotiating the price, verifying quality, and coordinating the logistics. You deal with us instead of with several factories at once.

  • Original Packaging and Documents from the Manufacturer

The manufacturer sends your D-Xylose out of its own factory in the original packing, through to your destination port. The COA, COO, MSDS, TDS and any certifications reach you from the manufacturer as well.

  • Free Samples and Lead Time

We send 100 to 500 g free for your own laboratory to test and you cover only the courier, usually within 2 to 3 working days. ETD is usually within 7 to 15 days once the order is confirmed, and we check that date against the factory's own manufacturing schedule before we give it to you.

  • Combined Shipment

We can load D-Xylose together with other ingredients such as Fructooligosaccharides, Dextrose and Dextrose Monohydrate into one 20' FCL. If your quantity is small, we can also ship LCL.

Regulatory Status

D-Xylose is recognised as a food and pharmaceutical ingredient in most major markets without an E number.

The U.S. FDA accepts D-xylose as a GRAS ingredient. It appears in the USP-NF and the European Pharmacopoeia under monographs for D-xylose, primarily covering the diagnostic test use.

JECFA reviewed D-xylose and concluded no specified ADI was required.

Kosher and Halal certifications are routinely available from leading manufacturers.

Manufacturing Process

D-Xylose is produced by hydrolysis of xylan-rich plant biomass.

Corn cob, sugarcane bagasse, and birch hardwood are the dominant industrial feedstocks. The biomass is pretreated with dilute mineral acid under heat and pressure to dissolve the xylan and cleave it to free xylose.

The hydrolysate is neutralised and clarified to remove lignin and acid-degradation products such as furfural.

The clarified solution is purified by activated carbon, ion-exchange demineralization, and chromatographic separation from accompanying glucose and arabinose.

The purified xylose solution is concentrated and crystallised. The crystals are washed, dried, and milled.
