Hubei Well-being Biotechnology Co., Ltd., registered in Chinese as Hubei Kangleyuan Biotechnology Co., Ltd., extracts natural colours and plant extracts at No. 268 Xiangyue Road in the Houhu management district of Qianjiang, Hubei, beside the Houhu national wetland park. New workshops, GMP production rooms and a research building total more than 23,000 square metres. A sales centre operates from Jianghan District in Wuhan.

The colours are drawn from gardenia, safflower, sorghum, cabbage and radish, giving a range that covers gardenia yellow, gardenia blue, safflower yellow, sorghum red and radish red, alongside monascus red and lac colour. Gardenia yellow is described as a carotenoid type based on crocin and crocetin, an orange-yellow to orange-red powder that dissolves readily in water and dilute ethanol. Radish red is made by extracting, refining and drying red-fleshed radish. The company also produces plant extracts, among them a mulberry leaf extract prepared by extraction, concentration, drying and sieving of dried Morus alba leaves.

Raw material comes partly from the company's own gardenia plantings, which it puts at 10,000 mu. It holds several invention patents on plant extraction and works with universities and research institutes in Wuhan, describing itself as an integrated production, teaching and research operation. Product is sold into food, pharmaceuticals, health products, feed and cosmetics, in China and for export.
