2-Methyl-3-Furanthiol

2-Methyl-3-Furanthiol is a colourless to pale yellow liquid aroma chemical with the formula C₅H₆OS and CAS number 28588-74-1. It is one of the most important key odorants of cooked beef, with a profile that combines meaty, brothy, and roasted-sulphur character.

The compound is dosed at extremely low levels in finished food, typically in the parts-per-billion range, and even small overdoses can push a profile toward an unwanted onion or rubber note.

We source bulk 2-Methyl-3-Furanthiol from top China manufacturers for our partners. The manufacturers are in Shandong. A smaller requirement can ship in a combined container with other ingredients.

Please send the grade you need, the volume and your destination port, and we will come back with a solution and a price.

Common Markets Grades

2-Methyl-3-Furanthiol trades in two forms, neat and diluted.

The standard commercial grade is 98 percent minimum assay by gas chromatography, packed in amber glass under nitrogen and stored cool to slow oxidative dimerization.

Pre-diluted solutions at 0.1 percent, 1 percent, and 10 percent in triacetin, propylene glycol, or refined vegetable oil are common, because the neat material is too potent to weigh accurately at flavour-bench scale.

FCC and FEMA GRAS conforming material is the routine specification. Kosher and Halal certifications exist on request.

Applications

  • Beef, roast beef, and pan-roast meat flavours as a primary character impact ingredient
  • Pork and game meat compounds for cooked-meat realism
  • Chicken broth and roast chicken flavours at lower dosing than beef
  • Process savory bases including yeast extract and HVP-style blends
  • Bouillon, gravy, and culinary stock flavours
  • Snack seasonings for meat-coated chips and extruded products
  • Pet food palatants for the cooked-meat top note
  • Sulfury accents in vegetable flavours such as cooked onion and shallot
  • Coffee and roasted-nut blends for a savory bottom layer
  • Reaction-flavour finishing where it sharpens the meaty character
  • Vegetarian and plant-based meat analogs to deliver authentic cooked-meat impact

How We Help Source 2-Methyl-3-Furanthiol

  • Direct Factory Sourcing

We run the whole process: selecting the manufacturer from the top Chinese food ingredient producers, negotiating the price, verifying quality, and coordinating the logistics. You deal with us instead of with several factories at once.

  • Original Packaging and Documents from the Manufacturer

The manufacturer sends your 2-Methyl-3-Furanthiol out of its own factory in the original packing, through to your destination port. The COA, COO, MSDS, TDS and any certifications reach you from the manufacturer as well.

  • Free Samples and Lead Time

We send 100 to 500 g free for your own laboratory to test and you cover only the courier, usually within 2 to 3 working days. ETD is usually within 7 to 15 days once the order is confirmed, and we check that date against the factory's own manufacturing schedule before we give it to you.

  • Combined Shipment

We can load 2-Methyl-3-Furanthiol together with other ingredients such as Capsicum Oleoresin, Ethyl Maltol and White Pepper into one 20' FCL. If your quantity is small, we can also ship LCL.

Regulatory Status

2-Methyl-3-Furanthiol is recognised as a flavouring substance in the major regulated markets.

It carries FEMA GRAS number 3188 under the Flavour and Extract Manufacturers Association.

The European Union lists it in the Union list of flavourings as FL number 13.040, permitted for general flavour use under good manufacturing practice.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recognises it as a synthetic flavouring substance under 21 CFR 172.515. The Council of Europe and JECFA have both reviewed the furan-thiol flavouring group and concluded no safety concern at the very low use levels typical of this material.

Material conforms to the Food Chemicals Codex monograph. Kosher and Halal certifications are routinely provided.

Manufacturing Process

Industrial 2-Methyl-3-Furanthiol is produced by synthetic routes that build the thiol onto a methylated furan ring.

The classical route brominates 2-methylfuran at the 3-position and then displaces the bromide with a sulphur nucleophile such as thiourea, followed by hydrolysis to free the thiol. The same backbone can be obtained from 3-bromo-2-methylfuran prepared by alternative furan syntheses.

A higher-purity modern route starts from 2-methyl-3-furoic acid or 2-methyl-3-furaldehyde, which is converted through a series of steps to the thiol with control of regiochemistry.

The crude thiol is purified by vacuum distillation under nitrogen. Because the free sulfhydryl readily oxidises to the corresponding disulfide (bis(2-methyl-3-furyl) disulfide), the finished material is stabilised with a trace antioxidant and packed under inert gas in cool, dark storage.
