Manufacturing Process
2-Methyltetrahydrofuran-3-one is produced synthetically from simple aliphatic building blocks.
A widely used route condenses propylene oxide with ethyl acetoacetate under base catalysis, followed by intramolecular cyclization and decarboxylation to deliver the methyl-substituted tetrahydrofuranone skeleton.
An alternative route is the acid-catalysed dehydrative cyclization of 1-hydroxy-2-pentanone or related hydroxyketone precursors, which closes the ring to the same five-membered cyclic ketone.
Crude product is purified by fractional distillation, typically under modest vacuum to limit thermal degradation. The finished liquid is filtered, packed under nitrogen, and stored cool to maintain colour and assay over time.
