Artemisia Argyi Oil is the steam-distilled essential oil of the dried leaves of Artemisia argyi H. Lév. et Vaniot, the Chinese mugwort known in traditional Chinese medicine as Ai Ye.
The oil is a pale yellow to greenish-yellow liquid with a warm, camphoraceous, herbaceous aroma. Its character is built on 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol) and camphor, supported by α-thujone, β-pinene, borneol, and caryophyllene.

Common Markets Grades
Artemisia Argyi Oil is graded by geographic origin and chemotype.
Qi Ai oil from Qichun County in Hubei Province is the recognised reference grade. The local cultivar carries the highest oil yield and the most balanced cineole-to-camphor ratio.
Nanyang oil from Henan Province serves the larger industrial market.
Suppliers distinguish between leaves harvested before flowering (higher cineole, brighter top note) and leaves harvested at full flower (higher camphor, denser body).
Some grades are standardised to defined cineole or camphor targets for pharmaceutical and topical formulations. Each lot is profiled by GC-FID, with thujone content separately quantified for regulatory disclosure.

Regulatory Status
Artemisia Argyi Oil is regulated as a traditional Chinese medicine ingredient and as a cosmetic and topical ingredient outside food applications.
The Chinese Pharmacopoeia carries the official monograph for the source leaf, Folium Artemisiae Argyi (Ai Ye).
The EU CosIng database lists Artemisia Argyi Leaf Oil as a cosmetic ingredient.
Because the oil contains α-thujone, food use is restricted in major markets and the oil is generally not used as a food flavouring in the EU or U.S.
The European Union sets thujone limits in alcoholic beverages under Regulation (EC) 1334/2008.
IFRA does not currently impose restrictive limits on the oil in fragrance applications, although standard sensitization screening and thujone disclosure apply. Kosher and Halal certifications exist on request.
Manufacturing Process
Leaves are harvested in late spring or early summer, before the plant enters full flowering. The traditional practice in Qichun is to cut on or around the Dragon Boat Festival.
Harvested leaves are field-wilted for one to two days to reduce moisture, then steam-distilled in stainless-steel stills for 6 to 10 hours.
Yields range from 0.4 to 1.2 percent of dry leaf weight, depending on cultivar, harvest timing, and stand age.
The crude oil is decanted from the floral water, dried over anhydrous sodium sulphate, and filtered.
Some grades are rectified under vacuum to remove discolored heavy fractions and to adjust thujone content, which is regulated in food and cosmetic applications. Each lot is verified by GC-FID against a marker panel that includes cineole, camphor, borneol, and α-thujone.
