Dong Quai Oil
Dong Quai Oil is the steam-distilled essential oil of the dried root of Angelica sinensis (Oliv.) Diels, known in traditional Chinese medicine as Dang Gui.
The oil is a pale yellow to amber liquid with a warm, sweet, slightly celery-like aroma. The dominant volatile is Z-ligustilide, a phthalide structurally related to celery seed phthalides, supported by butylphthalide, ligustilide isomers, and various sesquiterpenes.

Dong Quai Oil is graded by geographic origin and root anatomy.
Min Xian Dang Gui from Gansu Province is the recognised gold-standard origin and the reference grade for premium TCM and supplement applications.
Yunnan Dang Gui covers the larger industrial market and presents a slightly lighter aromatic profile.
Root anatomy matters because traditional Chinese practice subdivides the root into head (Gui Tou), body (Gui Shen), and tail (Gui Wei), each with different ligustilide content and traditional indication.
Suppliers also offer CO₂-extracted Dang Gui totals, which capture a fuller phthalide profile including the heat-sensitive Z-ligustilide that partially degrades under steam distillation.

Regulatory Status
Dong Quai Oil is regulated as a traditional Chinese medicine ingredient and as a cosmetic ingredient outside food applications.
The Chinese Pharmacopoeia carries the official monograph for the source root, Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Dang Gui).
The EU CosIng database lists Angelica Sinensis Root Oil as a cosmetic ingredient.
The root and its extracts are widely sold as dietary supplements in the U.S. and listed in the Therapeutic Goods Administration register in Australia for traditional indications.
The substance does not currently carry a U.S. FDA GRAS listing for general food use.
IFRA does not impose restrictive limits on the oil in fragrance applications, although standard allergen disclosure applies. Kosher and Halal certifications exist on request.
Manufacturing Process
Roots are dug in late autumn from three-year-old plants after the aerial parts wither.
Traditional Min Xian production uses smoke-drying in lofts heated by smoldering pine wood, which both preserves the root and slowly develops the characteristic dark colour and aroma.
Dried roots are sliced and rehydrated before distillation.
Steam distillation runs 8 to 12 hours at atmospheric pressure. Yields are very modest, 0.3 to 0.6 percent of dry root weight, because the principal phthalides are heat sensitive and partially degrade or polymerise during distillation.
The crude oil is decanted, dried over anhydrous sodium sulphate, and filtered. It is stored cold and under nitrogen because Z-ligustilide oxidises and isomerises readily, especially under light.
CO₂-extracted grades are produced separately at 200 to 300 bar to preserve a higher proportion of intact Z-ligustilide.
