Artichoke Extract
Artichoke Extract is a standardised botanical extract of the leaves of the globe artichoke (Cynara scolymus), valued for its caffeoylquinic acids and sesquiterpene lactones. The plant is the same species cultivated for its edible flower heads, but the extract is made from the leaf material that contains the highest concentration of bitter actives.
The dominant marker compound is cynarin (1,5-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid), supported by chlorogenic acid, luteolin glycosides, and the bitter sesquiterpene lactone cynaropicrin. Most commercial extracts are standardised to between 2.5 and 5 percent total caffeoylquinic acids expressed as chlorogenic acid, or 0.5 to 2.5 percent cynarin.
The extract is positioned for liver and digestive support and as a natural bitter in functional beverages, drawing on long-standing European use in herbal medicine for hepatobiliary complaints.

The base food-grade extract sits at 2.5 percent total caffeoylquinic acids and is the standard grade for tea bags, herbal infusions, and culinary bitters.
Supplement-grade material is standardised to 5 percent caffeoylquinic acids or, alternatively, 2.5 percent cynarin determined by HPLC. This is the form used in liver-support capsules and standardised herbal monographs.
A water-soluble spray-dried powder on maltodextrin carrier (typically 20 to 30 percent extract on carrier) is produced for instant-beverage applications and stick packs.
Highly concentrated extracts at 10 percent or higher cynarin exist for clinical-trial-grade formulations and for high-strength liver-tonic positioning, though these grades require careful taste-masking due to intense bitterness.

Manufacturing Process
Commercial extracts begin with dried artichoke leaves harvested in summer when caffeoylquinic acid content peaks. The Mediterranean basin (Italy, Spain, France, Tunisia, Egypt) supplies most of the raw material, with Chinese cultivation expanding rapidly in Shandong and Yunnan provinces.
Extraction uses hydroalcoholic solvent (typically 50 to 70 percent ethanol in water) at moderate temperature to dissolve the polar caffeoylquinic acids without degrading them. Some manufacturers use pure water followed by membrane filtration to produce a non-alcoholic extract acceptable for halal-certified beverage applications.
The crude extract is concentrated under vacuum, optionally purified on adsorbent resin to remove polysaccharides and tannins, then either spray-dried with maltodextrin carrier or vacuum-dried to a free-flowing powder.
Standardisation is verified by HPLC against cynarin and chlorogenic acid reference standards. Batches are blended to meet the declared marker percentage on the certificate of analysis.
