Bee Pollen

Bee Pollen is the granular material formed by honeybees from the pollen they gather on foraging flights, packed with regurgitated nectar and bee enzymes and carried back to the hive as compact pellets.

Beekeepers harvest a portion of these pellets at the hive entrance using a pollen trap, leaving the rest of the load for colony nutrition. The dried pellets are sold as a natural protein and micronutrient supplement.

Bee pollen is graded by botanical profile, processing, and physical form.

Monofloral grades are harvested in regions where a single flowering source dominates the season, yielding pellets of relatively uniform colour and a distinctive flavour profile. Rapeseed, sunflower, and chestnut are common examples.

Multifloral grades are the most widely traded format and reflect the mix of botanical sources available to the colony during the harvest window. Pellet colour ranges from yellow through orange, brown, and near-black.

Drying treatment is a key specification. Low-temperature dried grades preserve enzymes and heat-sensitive vitamins. Freeze-dried grades are produced for premium positioning. Sun-dried grades carry the lowest processing cost.

Forms include whole pellets, milled granules, and fine powder for capsule and tablet use, plus a defatted protein-enriched format for sports nutrition.

Regulatory Status

Bee pollen is regulated as a food and food supplement in most major markets, with no novel-food filing required given its long history of human consumption.

In the European Union it is treated as a traditional food ingredient and is subject to general food-safety legislation including limits on contaminants and pesticide residues.

In the United States it is sold as a dietary ingredient under DSHEA, with manufacturers responsible for safety substantiation and GMP-compliant production.

Codex Alimentarius does not have a dedicated standard for bee pollen, but national standards in major producing countries set specifications for moisture, ash, protein, and contaminant limits.

Labelling typically carries an allergen warning given the pollen content, since some consumers with severe pollen or bee-product allergies can react to oral exposure. Organic certification is widely available for material from qualifying apiaries.

Manufacturing Process

Production starts at the hive entrance with a pollen trap, a device that gently scrapes a fraction of the pellets off the legs of returning foragers as they pass through a sized mesh.

Trapped pellets fall into a ventilated collection drawer below, out of reach of the bees. The drawer is emptied daily during the active foraging season to limit moisture pickup and microbial growth.

Fresh pellets carry 20 to 30 percent moisture. They are immediately cooled or frozen for short-term storage, then dried under controlled conditions to a target of typically below 8 percent moisture. Low-temperature drying at 35 to 40 degrees Celsius is preferred where enzyme retention matters.

Dried pellets are cleaned to remove bee fragments, wax debris, and stray plant material, usually by a combination of air separation and manual inspection. Metal detection is applied before packing.

Material destined for capsule or tablet use is milled to a defined particle size, blended for consistency, and tested for microbial profile, moisture, pesticide residues, and heavy metals.
