Calcium Pyrophosphate

Calcium Pyrophosphate is the inorganic calcium salt of pyrophosphoric acid, with the formula Ca₂P₂O₇ (CAS 7790-76-3). It is a white, odourless, insoluble mineral powder produced by the controlled thermal condensation of calcium phosphate.

The compound is best known as a polishing abrasive in toothpaste formulations, where it removes plaque and surface stains without unacceptably damaging tooth enamel. It is also used as a food-grade calcium source and as a flow agent in selected food and pharmaceutical applications.

Common Markets Grades

Calcium Pyrophosphate is differentiated by particle morphology, particle-size distribution, and abrasivity index.

Dental-grade material is the largest segment, with a tightly controlled median particle size of around 5 to 15 microns and a defined Radioactive Dentine Abrasion (RDA) range to balance cleaning efficacy with low enamel wear. Toothpaste manufacturers buy it in food-grade or pharmaceutical-grade qualifications, often blended with hydrated silica and calcium carbonate.

Food Chemicals Codex grade is used as a calcium source and anticaking agent in selected food applications. It must meet strict limits on fluoride, heavy metals, and acid-insoluble residue.

Two crystalline polymorphs (α- and β-Ca₂P₂O₇) are produced depending on the calcination temperature, with β-Ca₂P₂O₇ being the most common commercial form.

Regulatory Status

Calcium Pyrophosphate is approved as a food additive and dental-care ingredient in essentially all regulated markets.

In the European Union, Regulation (EC) 1333/2008 lists it as part of the calcium phosphates group (E450 family) and permits it as an emulsifier, sequestrant, and stabiliser. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration affirms it as GRAS under 21 CFR 182.8223 for direct food use as a nutrient supplement.

In dentifrice applications it is recognised under the FDA OTC monograph for anticaries products and is included in pharmacopoeial monographs for dental abrasives. Cosmetic and personal care use is covered by the relevant INCI listing as Tetracalcium Diphosphate.

Pharmacopoeial monographs appear in USP-NF and Ph. Eur. for selected pharmaceutical and dental applications.

Manufacturing Process

Calcium Pyrophosphate is produced by the thermal condensation of calcium phosphate precursors.

The most common route starts from dicalcium phosphate dihydrate (CaHPO₄·2H₂O). The starting material is calcined at 400 to 900 °C, driving off water and dehydrating two adjacent orthophosphate groups into a pyrophosphate linkage. The β-polymorph forms below about 750 °C and converts to the α-polymorph at higher temperatures.

The calcined product is cooled, milled, and air-classified to the target particle-size distribution. Dental-grade material undergoes additional jet milling and tight control of d10, d50, and d90 values to deliver consistent cleaning performance.

Food-grade and pharmaceutical-grade material is produced under cGMP conditions, with controls on fluoride and heavy-metal carryover from the phosphate feedstock and on residual orthophosphate from incomplete condensation.
