Ethyl Lauroyl Arginate, commonly abbreviated LAE, is a cationic surfactant antimicrobial derived from the natural amino acid L-arginine, lauric acid, and ethanol.
The full chemical name is ethyl-Nα-dodecanoyl-L-arginate hydrochloride. The molecule has CAS number 60372-77-2 and is used as a broad-spectrum food antimicrobial active against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, yeasts, and moulds.

Common Markets Grades
Ethyl Lauroyl Arginate is a white to pale-yellow free-flowing powder of 85 percent minimum active content.
A standard food grade is the pure active, for incorporation into liquid pre-blends made at the customer's site.
Ready-to-use liquid concentrates are also produced. These dissolve LAE at 5 to 20 percent in a glycerol or propylene-glycol carrier for direct dosing into surface sprays and brines.
A cosmetic and personal-care grade is produced for use in oral-care, deodorant, and preservative-booster applications, where the cationic profile contributes both antimicrobial and substantivity benefits.
Material ships in 20 kg lined fibre drums or, for liquid concentrates, in 25 kg pails and 200 kg drums.

Regulatory Status
Ethyl Lauroyl Arginate received GRAS recognition in the United States in 2005 under FDA GRAS Notice 164. The notification covers use as an antimicrobial in cooked, ready-to-eat meat and poultry products at up to 200 mg/kg.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service issued a separate directive covering use on meat and poultry surfaces, with sanitary-handling expectations.
In the European Union, Regulation 1333/2008 authorises the substance under the additive number E243 for surface treatment of heat-treated meat products and sets category-specific maximum-use limits.
The cosmetic and oral-care use is regulated under EU Regulation 1223/2009 as a preservative entry in Annex V, with concentration limits set by product category.
Kosher and Halal certifications exist from the main producers, with Halal certification dependent on the source of the lauric acid used in the acylation step.
Manufacturing Process
Ethyl Lauroyl Arginate is manufactured by a two-step synthesis from L-arginine, ethanol, and lauric acid.
In the first step, L-arginine is esterified with ethanol under acid catalysis to give L-arginine ethyl ester hydrochloride. The reaction runs in excess ethanol at moderate temperature until conversion is high enough for the second step.
The second step is an N-acylation of the α-amino group of the arginine ester with lauroyl chloride or activated lauric acid. The acylation is carried out under controlled pH so that only the α-amine reacts, leaving the guanidinium group of the arginine side chain intact.
The crude product is recrystallised from aqueous ethanol to remove residual amino acid and fatty-acid impurities. Final drying delivers a powder meeting food-grade purity specifications.
The original process and the dominant commercial supply were developed by Vedeqsa, the food-ingredients arm of LAMIRSA in Spain, which holds the original GRAS notification.
