Ganoderma Lucidum Concentrate
Ganoderma lucidum concentrate is the liquid or semi-solid form of reishi mushroom extract, taken to a thick syrup or soft paste rather than dried to a free-flowing powder. It sits one step short of the spray dryer in the same manufacturing train as reishi extract powder, and is bought by formulators who want the extract already in solution and who would otherwise have to redissolve a dried powder.
The material is a dark brown to almost black viscous liquid with a marked bitter, earthy taste and a characteristic mushroom aroma. Solids run from around 30 percent for a pourable syrup up to 60 or 70 percent for a soft extract that has to be warmed before it will move. The dissolved load is a mixture of beta-glucan polysaccharides, oligosaccharides, proteins, minerals and, where an alcohol stage has been used, lanostane triterpenoids.
Concentrate is fully miscible with water and with low-alcohol systems, and disperses in glycerine and propylene glycol, which is why it is often sold already cut with glycerine for liquid supplement work. It is more perishable than the dried powder, so it is preserved by high solids alone, by chilling, or by a permitted preservative, and it darkens and can throw a sediment over long storage.

Common Markets Grades
Concentrates are specified by solids content and by the extraction route behind them. Water extracted concentrates at 30 to 50 percent solids are the volume grades, sold on a plant-to-extract ratio such as 10:1 or 20:1 with polysaccharide content declared. Dual extracted concentrates, made by combining a hot water liquor with an ethanol percolate, carry both a polysaccharide and a triterpene figure and are darker and more bitter.
Soft extract or paste grades at 60 percent solids and above are traded where freight matters and the buyer has heated handling. Glycerine-carried and propylene glycol-carried liquid grades are made for direct dosing into tinctures and liquid supplements. Organic certified and kosher or halal certified lots are handled as separate production runs, and some suppliers offer a decolourised grade for beverage work where the natural dark brown would dominate a pack.

Regulatory Status
In the United States reishi preparations are used mainly as dietary ingredients under DSHEA, on the basis that the botanical was present in the food supply before 1994. That covers conventional water and hydroalcoholic extracts, which includes most concentrate grades. Use in a conventional food or beverage rather than a supplement rests on a GRAS conclusion held for the specific preparation and use level, not on reishi as a category. Structure and function claims are allowed with the standard disclaimer; disease claims are not.
In the European Union the concentrate is a food ingredient, not an additive, so it has no E number. Water and traditional decoction extracts of the fruiting body are generally treated as having a history of consumption in the EU before May 1997 and so fall outside the Novel Food Regulation, while more unusual preparations may need authorisation. Health claims are limited to the authorised list, which does not currently include reishi. Where the concentrate is carried in glycerine or propylene glycol, the carrier is declared as an ingredient and has to meet its own purity criteria. Codex has no commodity standard for reishi concentrate, so specifications are contractual.
Manufacturing Process
Dried Ganoderma fruiting bodies are milled and extracted with hot water at 90 to 100 degrees Celsius in multiple passes, often after a short cellulase treatment that opens the chitin-rich cell wall and raises the recovery of soluble glucans. The extract is separated from spent biomass on a filter press or decanter centrifuge, then clarified through a plate filter or a ceramic membrane to remove fines and colloidal matter that would later drop out as sediment.
For dual extracted material the biomass is separately percolated with ethanol to recover triterpenoids and the solvent is stripped under vacuum before the two liquors are combined. The clarified liquor is then concentrated in a falling film or forced circulation vacuum evaporator at a low boiling temperature, which protects the heat-sensitive fractions and drives the solids up to the target figure. The concentrate is pasteurised, assayed and adjusted to the declared ratio, then hot filled into drums or pails and cooled. Cold storage is normal for the lower-solids grades.
