Hemp Protein is a plant-based protein produced from the seeds of Cannabis sativa, the industrial hemp plant. Conventional grades are made from cold-pressed hempseed cake and typically carry around 50 percent protein on a dry basis.

The amino acid profile of hempseed protein is considered complete, containing all nine essential amino acids in useful amounts, including a meaningful level of arginine.

Common Markets Grades

Hemp Protein is graded by protein content, fibre content, and hull-removal status.

The standard 50 percent grade is produced from cold-pressed hempseed cake, with intact hulls and a meaningful fibre fraction. This grade carries a recognizable nutty, grassy flavour and a dark green colour.

A 60 to 70 percent concentrate is produced by sieving and air classification, which removes hull-derived fibre and concentrates protein.

True hemp protein isolates above 80 percent protein are now reaching the market, produced by wet alkaline extraction of dehulled hempseed meal. These grades show lighter colour and milder flavour, suitable for beverages and dairy alternatives.

Organic certification is widely available. Industrial hemp is grown under tight regulatory definitions that limit THC content in the source crop.

Regulatory Status

Hemp Protein is regulated as a food ingredient derived from industrial hemp.

In the United States, hempseed-derived ingredients including hemp protein are addressed by U.S. Food and Drug Administration GRAS notifications GRN 765, 771, and 778, which cover hulled hempseed, hempseed protein powder, and hempseed oil. These cover most common food uses.

In the European Union, hempseed and hempseed flour have a documented history of food use and are not subject to Novel Food authorisation. Higher-purity isolates may face Novel Food review on a case-by-case basis.

The source crop must meet legal definitions of industrial hemp, which include a maximum delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content in the plant material. These thresholds differ by country.

Hempseed is not classified as a regulated priority allergen. Kosher, Halal, vegan, and non-GMO certifications are widely available. Organic certification is supported by certified organic hemp growers.

Manufacturing Process

Hemp Protein is produced from hempseed by mechanical and, increasingly, wet extraction routes.

The primary commercial route begins with cleaning and cold-pressing of hempseed. The press removes most of the oil, which is the highest-value coproduct. The residual press cake contains the protein along with hulls and remaining oil.

The press cake is milled to a fine flour. Sieving and air classification separate the protein-rich fines from the hull-rich coarse fraction. This yields concentrate grades up to 60 to 70 percent protein.

For isolate production, dehulled hempseed meal is slurried in water at alkaline pH. The protein dissolves while fibre is removed by centrifugation, then is precipitated at the isoelectric point near pH 5.0, washed, neutralised, and spray-dried.

Membrane filtration is used in some operations to deliver isolates with better preserved native structure and lower colour carryover. Producers in Canada, China, and several European countries operate at commercial scale.
