Organic Seabuckthorn Pulp Oil is a deep orange-red oil cold-pressed from the soft fruit flesh of Hippophae rhamnoides berries.
It is one of the few commercial plant oils dominated by palmitoleic acid (C16:1, omega-7), which typically accounts for 25 to 40 percent of total fatty acids. The combination of palmitoleic acid, carotenoid pigments, and tocopherols gives the oil its distinctive colour, viscosity, and skin-feel.

Common Markets Grades
Two grades of Organic Seabuckthorn Pulp Oil reach the market: cold-pressed and supercritical CO2 extracted.
The cold-pressed grade carries the highest sensory profile and the deepest orange-red colour, with carotenoid content commonly above 1500 mg/kg. It is preferred for cosmetic and topical applications where colour and aroma carry brand value.
The CO2-extracted grade delivers a cleaner, less rancidity-prone oil with carotenoid levels above 2000 mg/kg and palmitoleic acid above 30 percent. It is the standard for softgel and capsule fills.
A diluted grade at 10 to 20 percent active oil in organic sunflower or MCT is produced for skincare formulators who want easier handling and lower colour intensity.
All grades are USDA NOP and EU 2018/848 certifiable.

Regulatory Status
Sea buckthorn pulp oil has long-standing food use across Eurasia and is therefore not a novel food in the European Union.
In the U.S., the oil is treated as a conventional food ingredient and as a dietary supplement ingredient under DSHEA. Cosmetic use follows standard INCI labelling as Hippophae Rhamnoides Fruit Oil.
USDA NOP and EU 2018/848 organic certifications cover both cold-pressed and CO2-extracted formats. Kosher and Halal certifications are commonly issued.
The oil's high carotenoid content can stain skin, fabric, and packaging at full strength. This is a known property rather than a quality defect, and most cosmetic formats use dilution to manage it.
Manufacturing Process
Berries are harvested in late autumn, washed, and separated into seed and pulp fractions. The pulp is dried gently to a target moisture for pressing.
For the cold-pressed grade, dried pulp passes through a screw press at controlled temperature, ideally below 50 degrees C, to protect carotenoids and tocopherols. The crude oil is settled, filtered, and bottled.
For the CO2 grade, dried pulp is loaded into pressure vessels and extracted with supercritical carbon dioxide. The process leaves no solvent residue and yields a higher carotenoid recovery than mechanical pressing.
Yield is modest because berry pulp carries only 3 to 8 percent oil. This, combined with the manual harvest and the short autumn window, is the main reason pulp oil sits at the premium end of the seed-oil market.
