Alpha-Hexylcinnamaldehyde is a pale yellow oily aldehyde with a deep, rich jasmine-floral profile and a longer dry-down than its amyl analogue, making it one of the most widely used jasmine notes in modern fragrance.

Alpha-Hexylcinnamaldehyde is one of the most extensively studied fragrance materials and is recognised by IFRA without quantitative restriction for most product categories.

The European Union lists it as a declared fragrance allergen under Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009, requiring label declaration above 0.001 percent in leave-on cosmetics and 0.01 percent in rinse-off cosmetics.

It is registered under REACH at the highest tonnage band by all major fragrance houses. The substance is listed on FEMA GRAS as 2569 for flavour use and on the principal global chemical inventories including TSCA, DSL, IECSC, AICS, KECL, and PICCS.

Dermal sensitization data place it among the lower-risk fragrance aldehydes, which supports its broad use in leave-on personal care.

Manufacturing Process

Commercial synthesis proceeds by base-catalysed aldol condensation of benzaldehyde with octanal, in close analogy to the amyl homologue but with octanal as the alpha-CH active partner.

The reaction is carried out in dilute aqueous-alcoholic alkali, typically sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide, at 30 to 50 degrees Celsius. Controlled feed rate and temperature favor the cross-condensation product and suppress octanal self-condensation.

After neutralisation and phase separation, the crude aldehyde is washed, dried over anhydrous sodium sulphate, and fractionally distilled under reduced pressure. A final wiped-film distillation removes high-boiling impurities and yields a colourless to faint yellow liquid with the characteristic warm floral odour.

Trans-isomer enrichment is achieved through controlled equilibration during the final purification stages, since the trans form carries the cleaner and more powerful jasmine note.
