DMAE Bitartrate is the L-tartaric acid salt of 2-dimethylaminoethanol (C₄H₁₁NO·C₄H₆O₆, CAS 5988-51-2), a tertiary amino alcohol with cholinergic and membrane-stabilising activity.
The bitartrate salt is the most common commercial form because it converts the hygroscopic, fishy-smelling free base into a stable, odourless, free-flowing crystalline powder suitable for tabletting, encapsulation, and topical formulation.

Standard supplement grade assays at 99 percent minimum by titration, with related substances and residual solvents controlled per supplier specifications. Cosmetic and topical grades carry tighter limits on heavy metals and microbial contamination, as the salt is used at up to 3 percent in leave-on skin formulations.
Pharmaceutical-reference material at 99.5 percent purity is produced for research and small-scale clinical work. The corresponding free base, dimethylethanolamine, is also offered but is rarely used in finished consumer products because of its odour and instability.

DMAE Bitartrate has a varied regulatory status across markets.
In the United States it is sold as a dietary supplement ingredient under DSHEA, with grandfathered status based on pre-1994 use. In Canada it is permitted as a Natural Health Product ingredient for cognitive support at defined dose ranges.
In the European Union the food-supplement status is unsettled, and several member states treat DMAE as a non-authorised ingredient for oral supplements. Cosmetic use is permitted in the European Union under the Cosmetic Regulation 1223/2009 without a positive listing requirement, subject to general safety assessment.
Drug status applies to a related compound, deanol aceglumate, which is registered as a pharmaceutical for cognitive indications in several Latin American and Eastern European markets. Manufacturing Process
DMAE Bitartrate is manufactured by salt formation between dimethylethanolamine and L-tartaric acid.
Dimethylethanolamine itself is produced industrially by the reaction of ethylene oxide with dimethylamine under pressure, a well-established petrochemical route. The crude amino alcohol is purified by distillation to give a colourless liquid of pharmaceutical or cosmetic grade.
The salt is formed by dissolving the free base and L-tartaric acid in stoichiometric ratio in warm aqueous ethanol. On cooling, the bitartrate crystallises as a white solid, which is filtered, washed, and dried under vacuum.
The resulting powder is stable to ambient air and humidity and ships in standard fibre drums with polyethylene liners. Quality control covers assay, melting range, residual solvents, heavy metals, and microbiological status.
