Ginseng Adventitious Root Dried Root
Ginseng adventitious root, dried root, is ginseng biomass grown in a bioreactor rather than in soil. Adventitious roots are induced from explant tissue of Panax ginseng, multiplied as a root suspension culture in liquid medium, then harvested, washed and dried to give a root material that is botanically ginseng but produced in weeks instead of the four to six years a field crop takes.
The dried material is a light tan to brown mass of fine, branching fibrous rootlets, brittle when dry and usually sold whole or milled to a coarse powder. Its active fraction is the same family of dammarane triterpene saponins as field ginseng, the protopanaxadiol ginsenosides such as Rb1, Rc and Rd and the protopanaxatriol ginsenosides such as Rg1 and Re, alongside polysaccharides and phenolics. The diol group usually dominates in cultured roots, and total ginsenoside content is typically in the range of one to two percent on a dry basis, which can exceed what an equivalent weight of young field root delivers.
The dried root is not itself soluble. It is used as an extraction feedstock or milled into powdered formats, and it is hygroscopic enough that it has to be held below about ten percent moisture to stay stable and free of mould.

Common Markets Grades
The main commercial split is between whole dried root, sold as an extraction and decoction feedstock, and milled root powder at 60 to 100 mesh for direct use in capsules, tablets and instant drinks. Beyond format, lots are differentiated by declared total ginsenoside content, usually stated by HPLC as the sum of the named ginsenosides rather than by a colourimetric total saponin figure, and buyers should confirm which basis a quoted percentage uses.
Drying route is a further distinction. Hot air dried root is the standard grade, dried at around 50 degrees Celsius, while freeze dried root is paler, more friable and carries a small premium. Some producers also offer a steamed or red-processed grade in which the harvested root is heat treated before drying, which converts part of the native ginsenoside pool to the less polar Rg3 and Rg5 forms in the same way red ginseng is made from white. Organic certified production is possible because the medium composition is controlled, and lots are commonly offered with pesticide-free and heavy metal declarations, which is one of the principal selling points against field grown root.

Regulatory Status
In the United States Panax ginseng root is a long-established dietary ingredient under DSHEA and is also affirmed as generally recognised as safe as a natural flavouring substance in the essential oils and natural extractives listing. Bioreactor grown adventitious root is botanically the same species and is generally handled as ginseng root for supplement purposes, though a manufacturer relying on the pre-1994 marketing history should be satisfied that the cultured material is not chemically different enough from field root to be treated as a new dietary ingredient. Permitted claims are structure and function claims with the standard disclaimer.
In the European Union ginseng root itself has a history of use in food supplements, but plant cell and tissue culture derived material is explicitly within the scope of the Novel Food Regulation, and cultured root would normally require novel food authorisation before being placed on the EU market unless it can be shown to be equivalent to material consumed to a significant degree before May 1997. It is a food ingredient rather than an additive, so it has no E number. No health claim for ginseng appears on the EU authorised list, and several member states apply their own limits on ginseng in supplements. Codex has no commodity standard for cultured ginseng root, so specifications are contractual.
Manufacturing Process
Production starts from a small piece of Panax ginseng root or other explant tissue, surface sterilised and placed on a solid medium containing an auxin, usually indole butyric acid, which induces adventitious roots at the cut surface. A vigorous root line is selected and transferred to liquid medium, where it is multiplied through a seed train of shake flasks and small vessels into production bioreactors. Balloon type bubble bioreactors and cone bottom air-lift vessels of several tonnes working volume are the usual industrial format, since roots are shear sensitive and cannot take impeller agitation. The medium is a standard plant salt formulation with sucrose as the carbon source, and the culture runs for roughly forty to sixty days under sterile conditions with periodic medium exchange, sometimes with an elicitor such as methyl jasmonate added late in the run to raise ginsenoside accumulation.
At harvest the root mass is drained from the vessel, washed with clean water to remove residual medium and surface sugars, and dewatered by centrifuge or on a screen. Drying is by forced hot air at about 50 degrees Celsius to a target moisture near ten percent, a temperature chosen to avoid degrading the ginsenoside profile, or by freeze drying for the premium grade. The dried root is graded, milled where a powder is wanted, metal detected, assayed by HPLC and packed in lined bags or drums.
