Hovenia Dulcis Thunb Extract

Hovenia Dulcis Thunb Extract is a concentrated preparation of the fruit peduncles and seeds of Hovenia dulcis Thunberg, a deciduous tree of the Rhamnaceae family native to East Asia and known in English as the Japanese raisin tree.

The extract is standardised to dihydromyricetin (ampelopsin), a dihydroflavonol carried alongside related flavonoids including hovenitins, laricetrin, and the saponins hovenosides.

We source bulk Hovenia Dulcis Thunb Extract from top China manufacturers for our partners. The manufacturer is in Shaanxi. A smaller requirement can ship in a combined container with other ingredients.

Please send the grade you need, the volume and your destination port, and we will come back with a solution and a price.

Common Markets Grades

Hovenia Dulcis Thunb Extract is graded primarily by dihydromyricetin (DHM) content.

Standard commercial grades run at 10, 30, 50, 70, and 90 percent DHM by HPLC. The 50 percent grade is the standard grade for hangover and liver-support capsule formulations.

Total flavonoid grades are specified separately, typically at 20 to 40 percent total flavonoids covering DHM, myricetin, and quercetin glycosides.

Ratio extracts of the peduncle (zhi ju zi in Chinese) are produced for traditional medicine use at 10:1 or 20:1, often without a single-compound assay.

The extract is a pale yellow to amber free-flowing powder. The DHM-enriched grades have a slightly bitter taste and limited water solubility, which has driven supplier interest in dispersible and beadlet formats.

Applications

  • Hangover-recovery capsules, tablets, and stick packs in the morning-after category
  • Pre-drink and after-drink liquid shots in the convenience store and bar channels
  • Liver health supplements paired with milk thistle, NAC, and B vitamins
  • Functional beverages and bottled tonics targeting party-night and recovery consumers
  • Traditional Chinese medicine compound formulas requiring zhi ju zi
  • Sports recovery and post-workout formulations with an anti-fatigue angle
  • Energy and focus blends for late-night work and study consumers
  • Sleep aids combining DHM with melatonin or magnesium
  • Korean and Japanese health drink lines, often as a lead ingredient
  • Confectionery: hangover gummies, chewables, and lozenges
  • Pet supplements for canine liver support

How We Help Source Hovenia Dulcis Thunb Extract

  • Direct Factory Sourcing

We run the whole process: selecting the manufacturer from the top Chinese food ingredient producers, negotiating the price, verifying quality, and coordinating the logistics. You deal with us instead of with several factories at once.

  • Original Packaging and Documents from the Manufacturer

The manufacturer sends your Hovenia Dulcis Thunb Extract out of its own factory in the original packing, through to your destination port. The COA, COO, MSDS, TDS and any certifications reach you from the manufacturer as well.

  • Free Samples and Lead Time

We send 100 to 500 g free for your own laboratory to test and you cover only the courier, usually within 2 to 3 working days. ETD is usually within 7 to 15 days once the order is confirmed, and we check that date against the factory's own manufacturing schedule before we give it to you.

  • Combined Shipment

We can load Hovenia Dulcis Thunb Extract together with other ingredients such as Astaxanthin, Dehydrated Garlic and Lutein into one 20' FCL. If your quantity is small, we can also ship LCL.

Regulatory Status

Hovenia dulcis fruit and seed are listed as substances used as both food and traditional Chinese medicine on the relevant Chinese regulatory list, permitting use in food and supplements within Chinese jurisdiction.

In the United States the extract is sold as a dietary ingredient under DSHEA. Suppliers maintain self-affirmed safety dossiers and species identity controls.

Korea has incorporated Hovenia dulcis fruit extract into the functional food ingredient framework under the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, with claims approved for liver health support based on dossier review.

Health Canada accepts Hovenia dulcis in its Natural Health Products Ingredients Database. The European Food Safety Authority has reviewed dihydromyricetin in broader botanical assessments; member state acceptance varies.

Kosher and Halal certifications exist where extraction solvents and carrier systems contain no animal-derived components.

Manufacturing Process

Production centres on Hunan, Hubei, Guizhou, and Sichuan provinces in China, with smaller volumes from Korea and Japan. The tree is harvested for both the swollen fleshy peduncles (the stalks supporting the fruit) and the small black seeds within.

Fresh peduncles and seeds are dried and milled separately or together depending on the target grade. Peduncle-only material is favored for traditional zhi ju zi extract; seed-rich material yields higher DHM content.

Extraction uses ethanol-water mixtures, commonly 50 to 80 percent ethanol, with multi-stage countercurrent reflux. The extract liquor is filtered and concentrated under vacuum.

For low and mid-strength grades the concentrate is spray-dried with a carrier. For high-DHM grades the concentrate is loaded onto macroporous adsorption resin, washed to remove polar impurities, then eluted with ethanol to recover the flavonoid fraction. Crystallisation from ethanol-water yields 90 percent and higher DHM grades.

Quality control by HPLC quantifies DHM and the related flavonoid markers. Heavy metal and pesticide residue testing follows the requirements of the destination market.
