Manufacturing Process

Industrial synthesis is a straightforward acid-base reaction.

Magnesium oxide, magnesium hydroxide, or magnesium carbonate is reacted with food-grade or technical-grade phosphoric acid in a controlled molar ratio. For the dihydrogen salt, two moles of phosphoric acid react with one mole of the magnesium source.

Temperature is held in the 40 to 70 degrees Celsius range to prevent premature dehydration and to avoid forming the dibasic or tribasic phosphate. Continuous stirring and slow acid addition allow the reaction to reach completion without local overheating.

The resulting solution is concentrated by evaporation, then crystallised under controlled cooling to yield the anhydrous or hydrated salt as required. The crystals are centrifuged, washed, and dried in fluid-bed or rotary dryers.

Major producers include Prayon in Belgium, Innophos in the United States, and several Chinese phosphate specialists. Output is modest relative to the dibasic and tribasic phosphate grades, reflecting the narrower application set.
