The U.S. Food and Drug Administration treats shiitake fruiting-body extract as a conventional food and dietary supplement ingredient. Lentinan as an isolated compound is regulated separately in pharmaceutical contexts in Japan.
USDA NOP and EU 2018/848 organic certifications cover both fruiting-body extracts and the cultivation substrate when applicable. Halal, Kosher, and Non-GMO Project verifications are routinely available.
Lentinula edodes is recognised in the Japanese Pharmacopoeia and in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia under the Xiang Gu monograph.
Manufacturing Process
Shiitake is cultivated on certified-organic hardwood logs or on supplemented sawdust blocks free of synthetic agricultural inputs.
Mature fruiting bodies are harvested before spore release, sliced, and dried at controlled temperature to lock in flavour and bioactive content.
The dried fruiting body is milled and extracted with hot water for the beta-glucan fraction. A secondary ethanol-water extraction can be applied to recover lower-molecular-weight bioactives such as eritadenine and ergosterol-derived compounds.
The aqueous extract is filtered, concentrated under vacuum, and spray-dried. Maltodextrin-free and tapioca-carried variants are both available for clean-label work.
Authenticity testing on every lot includes alpha-glucan content (should be low, confirming fruiting body rather than grain mycelium), ergosterol level, and DNA verification of Lentinula edodes.
