Shilajit P.E.fulvic Acid
Shilajit extract standardised on fulvic acid is a purified preparation of the dark resinous exudate that seeps from rock strata in the Himalaya, Altai and Caucasus ranges, traded on its declared content of fulvic acid.
Shilajit is not a plant extract in the ordinary sense. It is a humified organic material formed over long periods from decomposed plant matter compressed within rock, and its composition is a mixture rather than a defined molecule: fulvic and humic acids, dibenzo-alpha-pyrones and their chromoproteins, low molecular weight phenolics, amino acids and a mineral fraction picked up from the surrounding rock. Fulvic acid is used as the marker because it is the water-soluble humic fraction and can be assayed, although analysts differ on method and results are not always comparable between laboratories.
The purified extract is a dark brown to almost black powder or a soft resin, with a distinctive smoky, bitter and slightly mineral taste. The fulvic fraction is freely soluble in water and gives a deep brown solution; the humic fraction is soluble in alkali and precipitates below about pH 2, which is the classical basis for separating the two. The material is hygroscopic and cakes if left exposed. It is stable to heat but its colour bleeds strongly into any matrix it is added to, which limits how visibly it can be used.

Common Markets Grades
The trade divides between raw resin, which is the crude sun-dried exudate and carries a variable and often high mineral and insoluble load, and purified extract, which has been water extracted and filtered. Purified extract is graded on fulvic acid at 20, 50 and 70 percent, and sometimes on combined fulvic plus humic acid, which produces a much higher nominal figure for the same material and should be read carefully. Dibenzo-alpha-pyrone content is declared on a minority of specifications and is the more selective marker where it appears.
Physical grades are a free-flowing spray-dried powder milled to pass 80 mesh, a granulated grade for sachets and capsules, and a soft resin sold in jars for direct consumer use. Heavy metal content is the defining quality issue for this ingredient rather than assay, because the geological origin brings lead, arsenic and mercury into the raw material, so purified grades are differentiated in practice by their tested heavy metal levels and by whether the producer applies a dedicated removal step.

Regulatory Status
In the United States shilajit is sold as a dietary ingredient under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act. It is not GRAS-listed and has no food additive regulation, so its use is confined in practice to supplements rather than conventional foods, and firms rely on documented marketing history or on a new dietary ingredient notification. The FDA has issued warning letters to firms making disease claims for shilajit products, and the agency has also acted on imported material found to contain heavy metals above acceptable levels, so import testing is a practical regulatory reality for this ingredient rather than an optional check.
In the European Union shilajit has no E number, being a nutritional ingredient and not an additive. Its principal barrier is the novel food rules: shilajit does not have a demonstrated history of significant consumption in the Union before May 1997, so placing it on the EU market as a food or food supplement requires novel food authorisation, and it is not currently authorised. Several member states have taken enforcement action against unauthorised shilajit supplements on that basis. Lead, arsenic, mercury and cadmium in food supplements are subject to the EU maximum levels for contaminants, which is the other limit that applies to the material. No Codex commodity standard or JECFA specification covers shilajit.
Manufacturing Process
Raw shilajit is collected by hand from rock fissures at altitude during the warm months when the exudate softens and flows. The crude material arrives at the plant as a mineral-laden mass containing rock fragments, soil and plant debris, and its purification, not its extraction, is the main part of the process.
The crude resin is dissolved in warm water, since the useful fraction is water soluble and most of the rock and insoluble humin is not. The slurry is held, then coarse solids are settled and removed by decantation and the liquor is filtered through progressively finer stages and often centrifuged. Heavy metal removal is carried out at this point, either by chelating ion exchange resin or by controlled precipitation followed by filtration, and is verified analytically before the batch goes forward. Where a high fulvic assay is required, the filtered liquor is acidified to precipitate the humic acid fraction, which is separated, leaving the fulvic fraction in solution. The purified liquor is concentrated under vacuum at moderate temperature and either dried to a soft resin under vacuum or spray dried to a free-flowing powder, then milled, screened, tested for heavy metals and assay, and blended to the declared specification.
