Tripotassium Phosphate

Tripotassium Phosphate is the fully neutralised potassium salt of orthophosphoric acid, with formula K₃PO₄ and the abbreviation TKP.

It is a strongly alkaline, highly soluble white solid used as a degreaser, an alkaline buffer, an emulsifying salt, and a feedstock for specialty cleaning and water-treatment formulations.

We source bulk Tripotassium Phosphate from top China manufacturers for our partners, working with several of them. The manufacturers are in Jiangsu and Sichuan. A smaller requirement can ship in a combined container with other ingredients.

Please send the grade you need, the volume and your destination port, and we will come back with a solution and a price.

Common Markets Grades

Two hydration states dominate the trade.

The anhydrous grade is a white, hygroscopic granular or powdered solid. It is the standard for industrial cleaners, paint strippers, and metal-treatment baths, where high alkalinity per unit mass is the design driver.

The heptahydrate and nonahydrate crystalline forms are used where controlled dissolution and lower exotherm on contact with water matter, such as soldering fluxes and certain laundry formulations.

Food-grade TKP meets the FCC monograph at 97 percent minimum and comes as a fine free-flowing powder with controlled bulk density for dry-blend operations. Pharmacopoeial monographs in USP and Ph. Eur. set tighter limits on chloride, sulphate, and heavy metals.

Applications

  • Heavy-duty alkaline cleaners and degreasers for industrial floors, kitchens, and food-plant CIP systems
  • Metal-surface preparation prior to phosphating, painting, or galvanizing
  • Paint and varnish removers as the active saponifying alkali
  • Emulsifying salt in processed cheese where high-pH conditions are desired
  • Buffering agent in cereal-based ready-to-eat products and instant noodle seasonings
  • Antimicrobial wash for raw poultry carcasses in some jurisdictions
  • Boiler-water and cooling-tower treatment for scale and corrosion control
  • Soldering fluxes and ceramic glaze formulations
  • Component in oil-well drilling muds for pH control and shale inhibition
  • Laboratory reagent for preparing strongly alkaline phosphate buffers above pH 11

How We Help Source Tripotassium Phosphate

  • Direct Factory Sourcing

We run the whole process: selecting the manufacturer from the top Chinese food ingredient producers, negotiating the price, verifying quality, and coordinating the logistics. You deal with us instead of with several factories at once.

  • Original Packaging and Documents from the Manufacturer

The manufacturer sends your Tripotassium Phosphate out of its own factory in the original packing, through to your destination port. The COA, COO, MSDS, TDS and any certifications reach you from the manufacturer as well.

  • Free Samples and Lead Time

We send 100 to 500 g free for your own laboratory to test and you cover only the courier, usually within 2 to 3 working days. ETD is usually within 7 to 15 days once the order is confirmed, and we check that date against the factory's own manufacturing schedule before we give it to you.

  • Combined Shipment

We can load Tripotassium Phosphate together with other ingredients such as Sodium Acetate, Calcium Citrate and Sodium Lactate into one 20' FCL. If your quantity is small, we can also ship LCL.

Regulatory Status

TKP is approved as a food additive in the European Union under E340(iii), within the broader potassium phosphate group.

In the United States it is Generally Recognized as Safe under 21 CFR 182.1613 and 21 CFR 182.6285 as a buffer and sequestrant. The U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service permits the use of phosphate-based antimicrobial sprays on raw poultry under specific concentration and contact-time limits.

The European Food Safety Authority handles potassium phosphates within the combined re-evaluation of the food-phosphate group conducted in 2019.

For cleaning-product use, formulations must comply with the EU Detergents Regulation (EC) No 648/2004 and equivalent national rules on phosphate content for institutional and industrial cleaners.

Pharmacopoeial coverage exists in USP and Ph. Eur. Kosher and Halal certifications are routinely available.

Manufacturing Process

TKP is manufactured by neutralising phosphoric acid with potassium hydroxide at a 1:3 acid-to-base molar ratio.

Because the third dissociation of phosphoric acid is weak, full neutralisation requires an excess of KOH and careful pH control to drive the reaction past the dibasic stage. The reaction is run hot, typically near 90 °C, to keep the trisubstituted product in solution.

The clarified concentrate is spray-dried under a controlled atmosphere to yield the anhydrous grade. Crystalline hydrates are recovered instead by cooling and seeding, then centrifuged and dried at low temperature to preserve the lattice water.

Major producers operate in China, Belgium (Prayon), Germany (BK Giulini), and the United States (Innophos, ICL Performance Products). Anhydrous TKP is shipped in moisture-barrier liners because of its strong tendency to absorb water and carbon dioxide from the air.
