Vegan Vitamin D3

Vegan Vitamin D3 is cholecalciferol produced from lichen biomass rather than sheep-wool lanolin, giving a chemically identical D3 active that qualifies for vegan, vegetarian, and plant-based label claims.

The active is the same molecule as conventional D3 down to the stereochemistry. What differs is the upstream sterol source: ergosterol-related sterols recovered from lichen species in the genus Cladonia, then converted by UV irradiation to the D3 skeleton.

We source bulk Vegan Vitamin D3 from top China manufacturers for our partners. The manufacturers are in Zhejiang. A smaller requirement can ship in a combined container with other ingredients.

Please send the grade you need, the volume and your destination port, and we will come back with a solution and a price.

Common Markets Grades

Lichen-derived D3 is produced in the same downstream formats as conventional D3: oil concentrates at 100,000 to 1,000,000 IU per gram, dry powders on starch or gum carriers at 100,000 to 200,000 IU per gram, and CWS beadlets for beverage and tablet applications.

Crystal grade is produced at lower volumes for premium softgel and pharmaceutical applications, with the lichen origin documented through the full supply chain.

Carrier oils for the liquid forms favor MCT, sunflower, and organic-certified olive oil, since the buyer base is heavily weighted toward clean-label and plant-based brands. Antioxidant systems are typically mixed tocopherols and rosemary extract.

Applications

  • Vegan and vegetarian dietary supplements in softgel, capsule, tablet, and dropper formats
  • Plant-based milk alternatives (oat, almond, soy, coconut) seeking parity fortification with dairy
  • Vegan infant and toddler nutrition products
  • Vegan and plant-based functional foods including yogurts, spreads, and snack bars
  • Sports nutrition products positioned for plant-based athletes
  • Premium personal-care and cosmetic formulations
  • Vegan-certified gummy and chewable supplement bases
  • Clean-label fortified bakery and breakfast cereals
  • Vegan medical-nutrition products for malabsorption and bone-health management
  • Veterinary supplements for companion animals on plant-based diets
  • Religious-certification products requiring non-animal-source cholecalciferol

How We Help Source Vegan Vitamin D3

  • Direct Factory Sourcing

We run the whole process: selecting the manufacturer from the top Chinese food ingredient producers, negotiating the price, verifying quality, and coordinating the logistics. You deal with us instead of with several factories at once.

  • Original Packaging and Documents from the Manufacturer

The manufacturer sends your Vegan Vitamin D3 out of its own factory in the original packing, through to your destination port. The COA, COO, MSDS, TDS and any certifications reach you from the manufacturer as well.

  • Free Samples and Lead Time

We send 100 to 500 g free for your own laboratory to test and you cover only the courier, usually within 2 to 3 working days. ETD is usually within 7 to 15 days once the order is confirmed, and we check that date against the factory's own manufacturing schedule before we give it to you.

  • Combined Shipment

We can load Vegan Vitamin D3 together with other ingredients such as Vitamin C, Vitamin D3 and Vitamin E into one 20' FCL. If your quantity is small, we can also ship LCL.

Regulatory Status

Cholecalciferol from lichen is treated as the same regulatory entity as lanolin-derived cholecalciferol once the active meets pharmacopoeial identity. USP, Ph. Eur., and JP monographs do not differentiate by source.

The EU recognises the active under Regulation 1925/2006 and Directive 2002/46. The U.S. FDA covers D3 as GRAS for nutrient use under 21 CFR 184.1950. Lichen-source material does not require novel-food authorisation in the major markets because the molecule itself is established.

Vegan and vegetarian certifications (Vegan Society, V-Label, Vegan Action) are issued at the finished-product level and rely on the supplier's chain-of-custody documentation back to the lichen harvest. Kosher and Halal certifications follow standard pathways given the plant origin.

Manufacturing Process

Lichens of the genus Cladonia (commonly the reindeer-lichen group) are harvested or cultivated, dried, and milled. Lipid-soluble sterols are extracted with food-grade solvent and concentrated by saponification and crystallisation.

The sterol fraction is purified to give a 7-dehydrocholesterol-equivalent precursor suitable for the standard D3 photoreaction. The provitamin is dissolved in inert solvent, irradiated at UVB wavelengths near 295 nanometers, then thermally isomerised to cholecalciferol.

The crude is concentrated by molecular distillation and either crystallised to high-purity D3 or diluted into carrier oil for downstream formats. Sustainable sourcing protocols cover wild-harvest quotas and cultivation programs, with chain-of-custody documentation maintained from harvest site through finished form.
