Zinc Sulphate

Zinc Sulphate is a water-soluble inorganic salt with the formula ZnSO4 and CAS number 7733-02-0. It is the standard salt of zinc chemistry, used wherever a soluble zinc ion is required at low cost.

The compound exists in three common hydration states. The heptahydrate ZnSO4 7H2O is white and freely soluble in water; the hexahydrate ZnSO4 6H2O is the intermediate form, stable between roughly 39 and 70 degrees Celsius; and the monohydrate ZnSO4 H2O is the most stable form above 70 degrees Celsius and the preferred shipping form for agriculture and feed.

Zinc Sulphate is graded by hydration state, purity, and intended sector.

USP and Ph. Eur. heptahydrate assays at 99.0 to 102.0 percent on the anhydrous basis, with controls on heavy metals and arsenic. This grade serves pharmaceutical injectables, ophthalmic solutions, and oral supplements.

Food grade meets FCC monohydrate or heptahydrate specifications and is used in mineral premixes for cereals, infant formula, and clinical nutrition.

Feed grade carries 33 to 35 percent Zn (monohydrate basis) and is the largest-volume nutritional grade for poultry, swine, and ruminant premixes.

Agricultural grade ranges from 21 to 36 percent Zn depending on hydration state, sold as crystalline or granular product for soil application, fertigation, and foliar spray.

Technical and electroplating grades cover broader purity windows for industrial uses including viscose rayon coagulation and zinc plating baths.

Regulatory Status

Zinc Sulphate is approved as a nutrient source and pharmaceutical active across all major markets.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration affirms Zinc Sulphate as GRAS for use as a nutrient under 21 CFR 182.8997. It also holds USP monograph status for use in injectable nutrition and oral solutions.

In the European Union, Directive 2002/46/EC permits Zinc Sulphate (monohydrate and heptahydrate) as a source of zinc in food supplements, and Regulation (EC) No 1925/2006 permits it in fortified foods.

For animal feed Regulation (EC) No 1831/2003 authorises it as a nutritional additive (functional group: compounds of trace elements).

Pharmacopoeial monographs exist in the United States Pharmacopeia (USP), the European Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Eur.), the British Pharmacopoeia (BP), and the Japanese Pharmacopoeia (JP).

Manufacturing Process

Industrial Zinc Sulphate is made almost entirely by reacting a zinc source with sulphuric acid.

The mainstream feedstock is high-purity zinc metal, zinc oxide, or zinc carbonate. Dissolution in dilute sulphuric acid yields a clear solution that is then purified to remove iron, manganese, lead, and cadmium by oxidation, neutralisation, and zinc dust cementation.

The purified liquor is evaporated and crystallised. Heptahydrate crystallises below 40 degrees Celsius; monohydrate forms at higher temperatures or by partial drying of the heptahydrate. Granulation produces the dust-free product preferred for fertilizer and feed handling.

Lower-purity feed and agricultural grades are also made from secondary zinc sources, including zinc-bearing flue dust from brass production and zinc residues from galvanizing. These streams are leached with sulphuric acid, purified to a lower specification, and crystallised as monohydrate.
