Zhejiang Silver Elephant Bioengineering Co., Ltd. produces biological food preservatives by fermentation at the high technology industrial park in Tiantai County, Taizhou, Zhejiang. It is one of the earlier Chinese entrants into the field and one of a small number of domestic companies able to make nisin, natamycin and epsilon-polylysine with its hydrochloride on an industrial scale. Rhamnolipid and compounded preservative blends are also listed. The company received a second class National Science and Technology Progress Award in 2005.

It was a principal drafter of the industry standard for nisin, QB2394-2007, the national standard for natamycin, GB25532-2010, and the specification for epsilon-polylysine hydrochloride issued by the national health commission in 2014. In August 2018 it published a Zhejiang Manufacturing group standard for nisin as a food additive, the first such certification granted to a biological preservative.

Research is organised through a provincial enterprise research institute, a provincial academician workstation, a provincial high technology research and development centre and a municipal enterprise technology centre, and the company holds nine invention patents. It has carried out national programmes under the 863 plan and the twelfth and thirteenth five year plans. Certification covers ISO 9001, ISO 14001, FSSC 22000, OHSAS 18001 and a measurement management system, along with United States FDA registration.
