Calcium Formate
Calcium Formate is the calcium salt of formic acid, with the formula Ca(HCOO)₂ (CAS 544-17-2). It is a white, free-flowing, highly water-soluble crystalline powder that supplies about 31 percent elemental calcium.
The compound's largest commercial market is animal nutrition, where it functions as an acidifier and calcium source in piglet, poultry, and ruminant rations. Food-grade material is also used in selected baking and brewing applications, and technical grades serve as a set accelerator in concrete and as a leather-tanning aid.
We source bulk Calcium Formate from top China manufacturers for our partners. The manufacturer is in Jiangsu. A smaller requirement can ship in a combined container with other ingredients.
Please send the grade you need, the volume and your destination port, and we will come back with a solution and a price.

Common Markets Grades
Calcium Formate is graded in several quality tiers tied to end use.
Feed-grade material is the largest segment by volume, sold for incorporation into piglet creep feeds, poultry starter rations, and ruminant supplements. Specifications focus on minimum assay (typically 98 percent), particle size, and limits on heavy metals and microbial load.
Food-grade Calcium Formate meets Food Chemicals Codex or equivalent regional specifications and is produced for selected food and beverage applications including bakery dough conditioning and silage acidification.
Technical-grade material is produced for the construction industry as a concrete set accelerator and antifreeze admixture, and for the leather industry as a chrome-tanning auxiliary. Technical grades carry broader impurity tolerances and lower microbial control.
Applications
- Feed acidifier and growth promoter in piglet, broiler, and weaner rations
- Calcium source in poultry layer feed for eggshell quality support
- Silage preservative for forage and grass crops
- Calcium and formate source in ruminant supplementation against ketosis
- Dough conditioner and yeast nutrient in selected industrial bakery applications
- Brewing process aid for yeast nutrition and pH management
- Concrete set accelerator and antifreeze admixture in cold-weather construction
- Auxiliary in chrome tanning of leather
- Pulp and paper industry as a buffering and reducing agent
- Drilling fluid weighting and density modifier in oilfield brines
- Replacement for sodium formate in heated airport runway de-icers
China Manufacturers of Calcium Formate

How We Help Source Calcium Formate
Direct Factory Sourcing
We run the whole process: selecting the manufacturer from the top Chinese food ingredient producers, negotiating the price, verifying quality, and coordinating the logistics. You deal with us instead of with several factories at once.
Original Packaging and Documents from the Manufacturer
The manufacturer sends your Calcium Formate out of its own factory in the original packing, through to your destination port. The COA, COO, MSDS, TDS and any certifications reach you from the manufacturer as well.
Free Samples and Lead Time
We send 100 to 500 g free for your own laboratory to test and you cover only the courier, usually within 2 to 3 working days. ETD is usually within 7 to 15 days once the order is confirmed, and we check that date against the factory's own manufacturing schedule before we give it to you.
Combined Shipment
We can load Calcium Formate together with other ingredients such as Sodium Acetate, Calcium Citrate and Sodium Lactate into one 20' FCL. If your quantity is small, we can also ship LCL.
Regulatory Status
Calcium Formate is approved as a feed additive, food additive, and industrial chemical in essentially all regulated markets.
In the European Union it is authorised as a feed additive under EU Regulation 1831/2003, with specific entries for use as a preservative and zootechnical additive in piglet and poultry feed. In food applications it falls under the formic acid and formate family, with controlled approval levels in selected categories.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration permits Calcium Formate as a feed ingredient for swine under 21 CFR 573.220 and recognises related formate uses in food-contact and processing-aid applications. The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) lists Calcium Formate among approved feed ingredients.
For industrial uses, REACH registration in the European Union and TSCA listing in the United States are established for major suppliers.
Manufacturing Process
Calcium Formate is produced by two principal industrial routes.
The classical route reacts formic acid with calcium carbonate or calcium hydroxide in aqueous solution. Carbon dioxide is liberated from the carbonate path and is captured for reuse. The resulting Calcium Formate solution is concentrated, crystallised, centrifuged, and dried to yield the anhydrous powder.
The byproduct route is a co-product of pentaerythritol manufacturing. Pentaerythritol is made by the condensation of acetaldehyde with formaldehyde in the presence of calcium hydroxide, with Calcium Formate produced in stoichiometric amounts. The recovered Calcium Formate is filtered, washed, and dried for sale into feed and technical markets.
Food-grade material typically comes from the direct neutralisation route under controlled cGMP conditions, while feed-grade material can come from either source.
